Oh, how I wish reef protection were a priority with any governing body in Cozumel! Two tourist boats fishing at Maracaibo, lines in the water, on Wednesday. One inshore and one on the wall.
Lies published about lack of reef damage. Building piers on live reef. The list just grows and grows.

Sadly that doesn't surprise me. Given how big of a moneymaker the cruise industry is for a lot of the ports, there's generally not much official gumption to come down hard on them.

Dove it yesterday. Horrible distruction clearly on the reef. Everything flattened and crushed in a very clear path. A reef overhang smashed off the size of a diver... Also the 10m wide place higher up the reef onto the reef where there is some sand where the chains dragged. The real damage is down on the wall.

It would be south of there. We dove Villa Blanca wall right before this ship was there and our dive ended right near the car ferry.

Ooh-ooh. I call dibs on the porthole glass. Those portholes are fantastic for making dobsonian telescopes!

This was last year. It has already been resolved. It's not currently an issue.

I’ve been told that the area of damage is about 200 yards long. Despite what is in the press. Have not seen it myself, but trusted buddy viewed video of the damage.

People were making jokes about sinking cruise ships. The Barcos Caribe folks were suggested as local experts. I lol'd.

Blame the polititians or the MTV, but the cruise ship industry exists only because there is a popular demand for it to exist. This is what people want to do and they do not care about the reefs.

Exactly. I've never been on a cruise ship. I'm a bit of a germophobe and reading about all of the viral outbreaks aboard them is more than enough reason for me to keep my distance, but people freakin' love going on cruises. I work with so many people that save up all year to take their annual cruise and come back raving about it like it was the most original and amazing vacation one could take. And most have no idea what is going on underneath the hull. I think most think the ocean is just a vast, mostly empty, big ass lake. As long as there is endless fried cheese and overpriced booze, people will always be willing to belly up to the snot covered buffet to say they went to Belize.

It's not a cruise industry problem, it's a people are gross problem.

Edit to add: Being an engineer, I'm completely blown out by cruise ships. As much as I loathe them, I must admit, I'm enamored by them when close by. True engineering marvels and a great display of human ingenuity.
