Just wondering where we got the instruction that a gauge had to be bungee'd on in order to be DIR? I didn't see any mention of it on the GUE site under the eqpt config section. I don't see any bungee'd gauges on any of the divers pictured, either.
The reason why people like the bungees is because they allow the mounting system to compensate for depth. If you are diving wet and wear your gauge on your forearm like most people do, then a traditional band will become loose as your wetsuit compresses. Of course you can use a regular strap and tighten it as you get deeper (and then remember to loosen it as you ascend!), but most folks find it easier to just replace the band with the bungees. The bungee mount also allows the gauge to move more easily from a wetsuit to a drysuit.

One additional point - there are those who feel that a traditional buckle represents a potential failure point, since it can put extra stress on the band if over-tightened. A bungee eliminates this.

I agree the depth compensation is a benefit, but the ease of donning is huge, for me at least. Fumbling with watch strap style buckles gets old fast.

Yup. If you switch between dry and wet a lot, it's really nice to never need to adjust things. Add in the bonus features of self-adjusting depth-compensating straps and redundant straps (one comes undone somehow, the other will still hold your gauge/compass/computer no problem) and you have a win-win!

Thanks for the extra pics! I'm not 100% certain I'm ready to pick up the tools, but it's tempting, having seen it successfully done now. I'm also diving dry a lot more these days so it's a little less of an issue than when I was switching it up a lot.

hello every one.

i was wondering where can i get a wrist boot for my aladdin tec 2g. i bought it with a cosole.

thank you

on the pictured mount above - why not just tie the bungie instead of using zip ties. seems it would be simpler and less failure prone. My DSS mount for my Uwatec BT is just tied with two bungies using knots - never had an issue with the knots. I use two seperate bungies, one per side incase any single part fails i won't lose it.

my 2 cents

FYI, those pics were posted 4 years ago...
