I used to think minimalistic was extreme but now that's how I roll. I've painted some nail polish onto my webbing to show where to adjust the triglides for my wetsuit and not wetsuit. It adjusts in just a few seconds. I've dove my rig without even a t-shirt and it was perfectly comfortable.

I'll replace the webbing if it wears out. I'll patch the inner wing if it gets punctured. If I can't fix it, I'll just replace it. The plate seems like it'll last forever. KISS and Cheap is my motto.

To the OP.....

Halcyon is pricey but you need to be looking beyond unit prices and you need to keep features in perspective.

You can get into a plate, wing, and some sort of webbed harness for something in that $400 - $500. range that you mention. Do what you want with sternum strap, shoulder releases/adjusters or keep it a 1 piece. Personally, I have been making my harnesses from scratch with purchased components. You can do all of that for small money and have what the rank and file are calling a BP&W.

If you are not careful with accessories you can end up with a DIY back inflate BC with a big price tag. Trim weight pockets may be desirable. But ditchable primary weights, lumbar pads, shoulder pads, weight plates and fuzzy dice all cost money and dilute the efficiency of the BP&W concept. Many of these also add buoyancy which is what many are trying to get away from when they avoid the jacket BC.

BlackFriday is just around the corner, patience..
Your decision will be made for you soon enough!

Fools gold is what I'll call it lol!

As long as people are paying the price and you're not, what does it matter?

Gold coming from a mom & pop joint is still 24-carats versus gold from Tiffany's. Yet people still pay extra for the Blue Box.
