Boat Crew Setting Up Gear?

You really don't need a DM. I don't either, but the harsh reality is most divers do. If they weren't out there on the boats, we'd be reading about deaths every day. Most divers are not ready to be out there on their own. Through no fault of their own, they have received inadequate training. Eliminating DMs might very well lead to fixing the epidemic poor training in our industry, but in the process many innocent people would die.

My first dive after returning from Fiji was with four other guys out of a 24' RIB. As we were changing out tanks after the dive getting ready for the next one I noticed that we were all working together... the guys behind the center console passing full tanks to the guys in front who were changing out the rigs and passing back the used tanks.

Thinking back about it:
1) working together like that made it much easier with the limited deck space.
2) no one was offended by having someone else putting their rig together.
3) I had started the process since I was in the front of the RIB with the rigs.

While not exactly what this thread is about there is parallel in regard to attitude... I'm sure glad that the guys I dive with can work together.

If you want to participate in MY dive, you'd better have something to offer - expertise, safety, additional gear - and you can bet that you'll be paying for your portion of the dive. Expect a tip, and you'll find yourself swimming back - along with Hank49.

What he said! Except I need them, and having a good one on board is a big plus.

I could wander off on quarry DMs with 50 dives, but I won't.

...And to think how silly these concepts are - yet you put up with someone getting in the way of your dive. In fact, you put up with someone getting in the way of the SAFETY of your dive.

Then tip them for it.

You've got to be kidding.

I always tip service people 10% for adequate, more for good service. There are bathroom attendants in hotels in places like New York. They hand you clean towels and some wash your coins so you don't get the inside of your pockets dirty. There are also doormen who expect to be tipped. I don't think you would like New York.

My experience is limited but I find most dive masters to be helpful in pointing out the local flora and fauna. Since I'm a fish person (not a wreck fan) that is important to me. I would tip all but the worst service in a 3rd world country because the people are poor. The dive masters work under hazardous conditions and often have families to support.

I don't see how divemasters get in the way of the safety of your dive in most instances.

You sound like a lot of fun. Seriously. Come on down and I'll take you out on my boat any time. And I won't charge you. And I won't touch your fricken' gear either, but I will kick it out of the way if it's laying on the deck. Or I may drop a fish on it. Keep divin' amigo. Hank

DMs and I get along fine. I don't take them on my boat, and we all get along fine.

I don't want to be watched, studied, protected, or informed. I can do that on my own, thank you very much.

DM's belong back on the dock, making the coffee. Give me a capable boat captain and a couple of good dive team members, and I'm perfectly happy. I don't put up with DM attitudes well, I don't need a lackey, and I certainly am not going to pay for whatever service they think they're offering.

As far as I'm concerned, if they feel that they deserve a place on my boat, I'm willing to oblige - when they pay me just like any other passenger, I'll consider taking them out.

"Tip" them? Are you kidding?

DMs are nothing more than dive industry leeches looking to suck money out of divers while they dive. Think about how nice that would be - to dive and get paid for it. That's exactly what they're doing, no more and no less.

Get a real job and pay for your diving instead of trying to freeload on some dummy who doesn't know any better. Parasite.

3. I have a full time job and teach diving (free of charge) on the weekend, in what
way does that make me a parasite?!!
