My friend the day will come when you and your wife won’t be diving anymore. You really should not be giving a moment’s thought to something that is frankly no business of yours and you should be enjoying this wonderful sport while you still can.

So what he and his wife won't be diving some day. Neither will me or you or anyone else for that matter. It naturally follows that we strive for maximum enjoyment of the sport, as well as life in general while we still have the ability.

That much said, what does any of it have to do with the rest of what you wrote there, although I agree it's none of his business what other divers do as long as he isn't adversely affected by their actions.

I am a retired tech instructor who definitely does all the setting up for my tech dives, but they are becoming fewer and farther in between as I age. I do a lot of NDL diving in Florida, and I set up my gear there, as does everyone else.

When I travel to other parts of the world on NDL trips, as I do frequently, I go with the flow. If the crew wants to set up my gear, fine. I'm pretty sure they've done it before, and it isn't the hardest task in the world to master. I can easily make whatever tweaks need to be done before I suit up.

When I learned to dive, my wife decided not to do it. She is an avid snorkeler, and she goes on almost all the trips where I am diving. I wish she had chosen to dive. If she were to suddenly show such an interest, I would happily set up her gear for her if that was what it would take.

Generally, when working on dive boats, I liked to see everyone set up their gear the first time. From then on, I would change it over and set it up the following days for them. This gave me a chance to see if they are competent and give the highest level of service. As far as diving with my wife.....if either of us sets up the other's gear, we would be more than comfortable diving it. There isn't too much to screw up that I can't see just from looking at it. It's a BCD and Regulator, not too complicated.

Why do you care about how others are setting up their gear of they are not part of your dive plan? When on a liveabord, I consider every dive a solo dive even if I am assigned a guide or somebody else as a buddy. I would definitely not spend 1 min to try to convince somebody who has not asked for my procedures. Only reason I would get involved is if I see somebody doing something that may impact my diving — eg somebody risking DCS because of poor profiles, messing with MOD, etc. to be honest it has only happened once and the dive guides were already dealing with it before I had to.

If you go down the rabbit hole of others SOPs, you can quickly pick up the one on others equipment setup, etc. Most people do not appreciate unsolicited advice even if it comes with good intensions.
