Before you head home after your wonderful vacation in Cozumel, please consider escorting a Cozumel pet to its new home. The HS makes this very easy to do, at no cost to you. Currently there are a number of animals waiting for transport to Florida, Philadelphia, Vancouver, Edmonton and other locations. Cats and small dogs travel as carry on. Larger dogs are checked.

Quite often, tourists visit the shelter or stop to see the critters at a Pet Parade or Mega Adoption Day and fall in love with a stray Cozumel dog or cat. But for one reason or another, some people cannot take the animals home with them immediately. These folks are determined to provide these animals with good lives and love; but they need our help.

Traveling with an animal overseas is not difficult or even costly, but shipping one is VERY expensive and can get extremely complicated, as it involves customs broker fees, kenneling services, etc. So, the HS is always looking for friends who can escort these lucky dogs and cats to their new homes abroad.

If you have it in your heart to help with this, the HS makes it very easy for you. Details such as health papers, booking the animal with the airline, and assistance at the airport are handled by the HS. All you have to be is the person attached to that animal, and you will truly be giving that critter an opportunity of a great life.

All escorts have reported good experiences and all say they would do it again. To be an escort truly is helping save an animal's life!

Thank you!

I escorted Bubbly from Cozumel to her new owners and it was easy. Monica from the Humane Society met me at the airport with the dog, carrier, food , snacks and all her paperwork. She helped me thru the check in process and off we went. Bubbly was small enough to fit under my seat, so we were together the entire trip home. She was a great company. Bubbly met her new family while they were in Cozumel on a cruise ship stop. Going thru customs in Atlanta was a breeze. The customs officer took a peek at the dog and her paperwork and sent us on our way. When we arrived in Newburgh New York, it was almost midnight. Bubblys entire new family as there to greet us. They had driven over 150 miles to get her. I think she was excited to see them as they were to see her again. I would happily do it again. It was easy and for me, the right thing to do.

PM me some details, please. I will be in Coz for one day in a couple of weeks and then 2 more days on the mainland before flying back to Philadelphia from Cancun. I have a 2 checked bag allowance and will probably only be using one. Traveling with 5 other people, so we might be able to take several pets.

Just want to echo what Judy said about how easy it is....so easy even a diver can do it:D I think it actually made my return trip home more fun!

Well, if even a DIVER can do it... PM sent

I wish I had known this back in April.
But at least I do know it for my next trip down.

Thanks for your enthusiastic responses! Please keep it up, folks.

I'm not in charge of the Pet Escort program -- Teresa Mentzer is -- so I have to forward your info to her so she can match pets to available flights. This may take a few days, so please be patient if you don't hear from me immediately.

The info Teresa needs is: Departure date, airline, destination. If you have a long layover at a connecting city -- in other words, time to deliver a pet to its new owners outside of airport security during the allotted connection time -- that would be good to know.

Though most airlines will take pets both in the cabin and below, some will not. Most limit the total number of pets per flight. Also, some airlines will not take pets in cargo if the outdoor temperature at time of departure is too high. And the HS goes to great lengths to make sure that each animal is healthy and calm and as prepared as possible to travel stress-free. As you can imagine, Teresa's job is complex and she strives to do it well, so please hang in there -- I'll get back to you after I hear from her.

Gratefully,
Deb
