I'd like to bring this back to the original thread on manatee harassment for a minute........

That was not what this thread was started for so let's keep it on topic. Read the origninal post if you are unsure of what the topic truly was.

I believe the deal is that you can't be secretly recording somene. You have to make them aware of it. And, that only applies to non-public areas. If you are walking down the sidewalk, and someone gets you on video, you don't have any room to complain because you have no reasonable expectation of privacy. Same thing with John when he is teaching students in the public waters of Crystal River. If you were to tap someone's phone or stick a video camera in their bedroom window then you would have a problem on your hands. I'm a little rusty on this but I am pretty sure reasonable expectation of privacy is the threshold. Regardless, I wouldn't be overly concerned about that weak attempt at a cease and desist John sent you.

My ex-spouse was a photojournalist for a major TV news station and I Dive is correct, you have no reasonable expectation of privacy in a public place. My ex- couldn't chase you into your home to tape you, but he could take any and all photos of anything that could be seen by a person standing out in a public area.

I did not read all the replys so i may be on my own. I have used them a few times and they took care of me. I stay in Tampa alot and they have waited on me and set me up with dive buddies to dive the cavernes there and springs. It was kind of a rip off since I really could have done the dive on my own if i could have found someone to buddy up with but.

I think this thread was about whether or not you should carry a snorkel.

I've been home from my dive vacation and have had a chance to simmer down on this one....
I flew to Florida to dive, and my parents booked me in to do two dives and a manatee snorkel with American Pro Divers. We were up and on the road at 5am to get there, and we ended up late. I admit this is our fault, no arguments there.
We get into the dive shop, the group we are diving with are all watching the manatee video, the guy behind the counter informs us that we are late, to which we all agree and apologize for, he then tells us that we are not welcome to dive because we are late. We are somewhat surprised at this because we have our own gear with us and all we need to do is drive down to the dock (which everyone else needs to do) and we are ready to go, except we need tanks. The guy then gets angry and says that now he has to put tanks on the boat for us and that will make everyone late.
To make a long story short, we calmly argued the point and were told that because we pulled into the parking lot and "got out of the car and stretched" rather than coming into the shop directly we were too late to dive and were not welcome to come. The guy had nothing polite to say, was insulting, rude, and not really making alot of sense with his arguments. We payed for our seats, griping amongst ourselves that this person was being uncommonly rude, he then angrily tells us we can pay for afternoon seats and not dive then as well. We walked out at this point.
I had read some negative reports on this dive shop, but we went anyways. Now I know to listen to Scubaboard members! Yes we were late and I agree that if policy says we don't dive, then we don't dive. As a store manager myself, I do however realize that there is no excuse for talking to customers in a rude and beligerant manner!
I will never ever go to that shop again! That kind of behaviour was disgusting, I have never seen anyone speak to my mother that way, and hope to never witness it again!

Next time your our down in Florida there is a really nice captian that goest the extra mile and lets you be late if you must infact he will let you choose your time considering that his trips our 6 persons or less!!! he has great reviews and comments about them. google Nature Coast Manatee Tours!!!!

You would think in this rotten economy some shops would try and be nicer.
That being said Birds is the place to use
