Would the isolator usually be open or closed? The valve would just turns off the left tank right, Not the 1st stage mounted on the left post?
I was confused as well when I was first leaning about doubles. I learned what each knob does this way:

ISOLATOR: separates left side from right side
LEFT/RIGHT VALVE: *****think of these knobs as turning off the regulator, not the tank.*****

Therefore a problem with a regulator (first or second stages) can be dealt with by turning off the offending post. A problem with a tank (neck oring, burst disk) is dealt with by turning off the isolator
