The TSA wants can lights in your carryon. Has anyone had a problem carrying on a can light in Cozumel? When people say spare batteries I am assuming store bought batteries such as alkalines not something sealed in a can light.

Publish the rules and enforce the rules consistently.

I've found the rules published more clearly in Cozumel than they are at my local airport, where it seems to be the whim of the agent.

1. It is Mexico. Let's not get carried away.
2. They do publish the rules. They even held the rules so DD could take a picture. As long as YOU read and consistently follow them, no problemo. Even if they aren't enforcing them that day.

Oh, and DON'T ever say 'Well its Mexico' to ANYONE in the airport.

We got the MX version of Global entry. After nearly rolling with the security guard while screaming "Viajero Confiable" we finally got a IMN guy to let us in the crew line area in Cancun where the kiosks are supposed to be. He looked confused and we had to show him the letter in the email on our phones. He kinda shrugged in defeat that we actually had something and sent us to the crew line. Then, as is my luck, we waited far longer behind the crew that we EVER would have in the regular lines as it was just our plane there. I noticed the beautiful shiny new kiosks that even appeared to have green lights on them. I asked the when he thought they would get them working. He said it didn't know. I made the mistake of saying 'Hey its Mexico, right?' I thought for sure I was heading for a cavity search. I think the Missus saved me with 'it would be the same in the US. Government take time and all..." or something like that. He WAS not amused at all. Yikes.

The thread seems to focus on foreign airports but I'm not sure those in the US are any better. We just returned from a trip to Utila last week and hit various airports in Canada, the US and Honduras. There still seems to be no consistency in TSA screening in the US. One place, take off your shoes and belt, the next airport, who cares. The next airport they "strip search" my camera gear and keep a tiny screwdriver and Allen keys. And yes, this was the US, not a foreign airport. Of course by the time you get to security it is too late to put those tools in your checked bags.... I will mention that at the Denver airport United terminal I was able to back out of security, go upstairs to a shipping store, and mail some oddly forbidden items that had already cleared 4 US airports. If we can't be consistent in the US, why would we expect consistency in foreign countries?

The TSA says they change things frequently so the bad guys can't exploit their predictability. I'm sure it's that and not poor management. :D

What I would like to have is consistency in enforcement. If you can't take batteries in your carry-on, allen wrenches or duct tape, I want it to be well communicated and enforced consistently. If you can't take them in your checked, I want to know.

It's OK, if whatever country doesn't go with the TSA rules, as long as we know what to expect when we get to the gate.

Publish the rules and enforce the rules consistently.

Did you see the two signs I posted above? I'm guessing you walked by them leaving?

One thing I noticed leaving Coz. The rules for carry-on items is different than going to Coz from the U.S.....

...just a word to the wise, be careful what you got in your bag going home, the "rule" could be different than it was coming down.

Security in other nations for flights to the US are required to meet TSA standards, but - with their own variation of rules. They vary from country to country so the TSA doesn't try to address the details......

They personally asked each in line to read this sign...
This one was on the check-in counter..

Hi All, Just a note to tell ALL that I am in the process of updating the "Sticky" at the top of the Forum Arriving and Departing the Cozumel Airport. Thanks to Don and Sharky, I have included all of the items listed on the Forbidden List. BTW-If there is anything else out there, new, old or changed information, please do let me know.

Yep, I did and I appreciate that they are posted. As long as they are enforced consistently I have no problems with it.

Jim

While I agree that enforcing rules consistently would make travel easier. I do still have a problem with rules that don't make sense.

For example, why is it that I cannot take a 15oz bottle of liquid in carry-on, but I can take an empty 15oz bottle and 5 3oz bottles in a ziplock bag as carry-on then transfer the liquid to the 15oz bottle before boarding?

They found a very small sharp tool I had in a pocket of a camera case BUT... Mexican security guy was very polite, professional and just doing his job. I had forgotten it and it was my fault. Box-cutters were the weapons that initiated the deaths of some 3000 plus Americans after all. Same with duct tape..yeah it can be easily used to restrain people. At least they are making the effort in a professional way and since mainly Americans are flying from Cozumel to USA it would be an obvious target of terrorists. I found the ridiculously long waits at US Customs (yet with no real thoroughness or professionalism as a result) in the USA far worse and far more stupid.

Expecting these rules to make sense will just drive you crazy. Accept it as "security theater" and move on.
