A word of advice - get in the face of your local reps. That is how those who want the dive law created got it on the agenda in the first place. Make sure that they know that there is a large group who object - before - long before - it even gets to a vote.

I think the problem is that most of us don't live in Gloucester. Basically, we don't have reps to voice our concern.

Does not matter. If you dive there and spend money there you are contributimg to the local economy. remind them of that. Then throw tea in the bay! That'll get em. Remind them what freedom is about and where it started. It sounds like yuppies who don't want their little private compounds invaded. Why are these things in Mass. called compounds anyway? Either that or sell all your gear and buy Harleys and ride thru their little nests constantly wearing colors and long beards. They'll really love that!

Curious as to what would spur this type of action in Gloucester? How enforceable could this new action be? I cannot see how local law enforcement would even be prompted to spend the time monitoring divers and their respective distances from a dive float. If they are trying to collect fines there are certainly better ways of doing it. X

i don't suppose there's any parity in this law with boaters actually being fined if they come within X feet of a dive flag?

That's the thing. I think that the amount we actually contribute to the local economy probably just isn't that large.

The point about enforceability is a good one. Unless you have a lobster number on your flag how are they going to identify who is diving where? All the flags look the same and I bet the local komitat (er...police) has better things to do than try to keep track of which flag comes out with which diver. I mean...I tangled mine, my buddy handed me his to untangle mine...or was it his flag?...so hard to keep track of. I may be mistaken but I still think they need to witness you perpetrating a crime to site you for it, and you can't very well site an entire group for a few violators. If everyone needs a flag it's going to get real confusing real fast. Of course I don't want to see it come to that, but if it passes that part of the law makes the other pretty much unenforceable.

Of course if it gets ugly someone could start a used prop business in the area :eyebrow:

I may know why divers are not liked in Cape Anne. After our dive a Folley cove we went to the small tiny seafood restaurant on the north side you know the one with the restroom so small your knees touch the wall when sitting down. Well my buddy ScubaBills had to go so bad after eating he believes he may have flooded the toilet as we left in a hurry. If this is the case, I can see why we aren't liked very much.

Definatley falls under the catagory of "Too Much Information."

"ALL" divers are required to carry a dive flag,
must remain within 25 feet of the flag
and can be no closer than 25 feet from a trap warp,

I guess i just don't see a probem here.

If you're close enough to shore that the town has jurisdiction, carry a dive flag and stay away from other people's traps.

Am I missing something?
