Just the mention of the words "catheter" and "fix" in the same sentence sends chills up my spine.

I never carry a flag. In Gloucester I head out, securely anchor the flag, do the dive and return to get the flag. Done that for eons and it makes everything much easier. In my earlier years of diving I had a few flag/lobster line entanglements and a few was too much for me.

Yeah, I dont get that adshepard.
I am not taking a religious stance and saying you are wrong, :)
I am just saying that *I* NEED a dive flag for comfort. I HATE having to tow it and getting caught in things, but when I surface, I know that that there is a marker up there to keep boats away.

Yes, I know, many boats ignore the flags, but I gotta try! :)

Bring a surface marker and shoot that with a spool if you need to surface away from the flag.

With the shallow depths of our shore dives, it's not like you can't hear a boat coming from a mile away anyhow, so I'm not particularly concerned with surfacing away from a flag.

Good point. The surface marker gig may be easier, need to consider.

I dont shore dive much (at all) but I DO hear boats all the time, but I cant tell, are they close, or is it one of the many just zipping along?

If you can hear it, it's too close, IMO.
