Ive been seeing an increase in the algae starting around the end of Bricks area for the past several years. Each time I start back diving after my summer whale shark sabbatical, my eyes are always seeing more and more growth. Its all related to the sewage and discharge from the island. Its all limestone and most of the sewage is just dumped through into the ground and it leaches out into the ocean. All the new beach clubs, new condo developments are making matters much worse. The Kuza beach club buried protected mangroves so they would have more land to use....no penalties there eventhough its a federal crime. Look at Columbia shallows....it's pretty much dead now. The cruise ships bring in probably 40000 people every day during high season....that's a lot of toilets being flushed and it ain't going into a treatment plant....Royal Carribean bought Playa Mia beach club and is doing a massive build there. Where is all their untreated pool water going to go? All their sewage.....
I know that island sewage is often not well treated. Are you sure the cruise ships are just dumping it overboard?

The sewage treatment plant is for most of the northern part of the city. The southern areas are untreated. Cruise ships won't be dumping in port. Maybe when they go offshore a few miles.....there was a video about a month ago of a sewage truck just opening the taps into the jungle of cozumel.....pretty common thing.

And I am confident that many of the homes and lots of the hotels dump into the aquifer. I have seen too many of those systems. I really wish there were no cruise ships but I don't think they are the sewage problem. Years ago we rented a place on Half Moon bay in Akumal. Parking was across the road and beyond the parking was manglar with water. It was interesting to see the little fish but the sewage smell wasn't so nice.

Yes the cenotes on the mainland sure are not as clean as we think they are. Major fecal contamination. Every year when they have that big rave in tulum, you dont want to be diving the cenotes there for a few weeks atleast because of the sewage in the system....unless you are wearing hazmat suit of course.

All part of the show. The whole area has been clear cut and now the authorities step in after 8 days of public complaints. Just fly drones over top , no need to enter. Hell, bring a step ladder and set it up on the sidewalk and you can easily watch over the fence. No need to go physically on the property. The whole trespassing thing here is a joke anyway. My wife's father isn't allowed in his own house after his douche son stole it from him with the local corruption.

This should surprise no one. It harkens back to the fiascos associated with the construction of the Fonatur Marina, where development of the site was "governed" by a hodge-podge of uncoordinated overlapping projects and permits with no universal oversight that would ensure that the final result would be a facility that would be a resource that would serve the needs of all who would use it. Parking? Oops, that wasn't on anyone's plate; we have a permit to build a hotel there.

Some good news is that the Government has formally announced a suspension on the 4th pier. So with the current politicians in power at the federal level, its a no go. Maybe after 3 more years when a new govt is elected then the developers will try again with new leaders to bribe. So for the time being it looks like Villablanca is safe from further development.
