I see people swimming there everymorning especially the competitive athletes. They start from around hotel villablanca swim north to stingray pens and return south. On Sundays lots of locals go there in the water. There is stair access to the beach all along their. The new pier will be built next to sunset bar area.
I was excited to discover this open water swimming area on my last trip to Cozumel while walking from Casa Del Mar to downtown. There are about a dozen lockers with outdoor carpet and sandbags to make walking through the surf easier. A real gem for swimmers and a big loss to that community. Hopefully the cruise ship pier progresses at a VERY slow pace.

I mean, why not? Cozumel isn't already struggling with its infrastructure, right? Build even more piers! What could possibly go wrong? 🙄

Absolutely. I mean there needs to be a couple cruise ship terminals south closer to the beach clubs because its congested in town. Maybe one at Santa Rosa to allow access to beach there? Since cielo is popular there has to be one at columbia / palancar caves area too. Once Royal Carribean opens its beach club up, gonna have to have one there too at San Francisco Reef. Build it an d they will come.... The ones exploiting the islands resources for their financial gain are opening up pandoras box unfortunately.

How much money does diving bring to the island? How much money do cruise ships bring to the island?

Do the math.

Cruise ships are the main beneficiary of these developments.
Of course, but the powers that be on the island are the main beneficiaries of the cruise ships' coming to the island. One hand washes the other.

isn't that the whole idea of the development at the old Palancar pier. I remember reading it was shut down several times during Covid but heard the work continued at night. Then there was a rumor the same guy was wanting to dredge a channel thru Cielo to the lagoon and dedge it out for a marina.
