I need three "near bent" days in Oahu

Same situation here, attending IETF, plan to arrive couple of days before and spend off-duty time diving, hoping to squeeze some night dives in during the week... AOWD, not so experienced (~40 dives) most of them in cold (<8C) low vis (0-4m). Been out of it for a couple of years, but plan to...

[regulators] Proton vs. Abyss and 42 vs. 32 vs. 22

I have a V42 + proton metal (2007 models) and it's absolutely wonderful... I can understand the wife liking it... also, it's great to take along on holiday due to the weight. I purchased it over a MR32 because I read a lot of people having some small issues with it, and it was a policy to...

    Recommend an easy-to-read computer?

I would also add the puck-style Suunto's to the recommendation (Gekko/Vyper.2/Vytec,...) if you want a large and readable display. Or the Cobra.2 if you like a console computer. Which one to get depends on your diving preferences and the depth of your pockets. cheers, dimitri

Where to get trained as a DM?

Hi, Maybe an option to consider (if you have 2 months time) is to check whether you can find a dive center that includes a free dm course when working with them for 1 or 2 months (do a search on "free divemaster" in google). This may be a great experience! kind regards, dimitri

    Crete, Greece

Hi Kompressor, Thanks for the info. I checked the kalypso website and it does look great. I will keep those guys in mind when I would travel to the south coast. My current trip is to the north coast of the island, have you dived over there (the messerschmitt wreck maybe)? Do you know some...

    Crete, Greece

Hello everybody, I'm going to Crete in June for work (Heraklion area) and as a scubaboarder it would be a serious sin not to bring my diving gear and take a look under water ;) (diving from june 17th till 20th or 21st). Is there anybody that can advise me on diving/dive centers in this area...

Do I need a backup computer?

I agree, a computer is for convenience. Adding a backup computer induces risks because you could get the habit of ignoring the most conservative one and switching the one you actually use between dives. I always hook an spg to the second hp valve and tuck it safely away in my bcd just in case...

Do I need a backup computer?

Maybe another reason not to go for a cobra is that it's good practice to abide by the most conservative computer you're using. If you use the RGB50 option in the D9, the cobra will get you out of the water much more quickly...could as well give the D9 to me :D

Do I need a backup computer?

A cobra would be serious overkill. The only thing failing is AI and not knowing your remaining cilinder pressure is a reason to abort the dive. A spare SPG of around $50 is actually all you need, the D9 will still function without transmission. If your D9 fails completely, you can just rely on...

Do I need a backup computer?

Yeah, when you shut down and reconnect, the code SHOULD be the same. The problem with the Suunto transmitter is that the code-changing procedure is turning the pressure below 15 bars and quicly (within 20 secs) turn it up again. Now, when you turn down the pressure, it's possible to have small...

    Grolsch or Heineken?

Drinking Dutch beer is like solo diving on a single tank filled with nitrogen...you're bound to get a headache :D

    Grolsch or Heineken?

Oh my god... grolsch and heineken.. yuk dudes, we Belgians wouldn't give that to our pets!! Goju here has already some taste, Chimay is pretty good ;) But you should all try REAL beers from Belgium.. things like Duvel, Leffe, Chimay, Westmalle, Westvleteren, Rochefort, Kwak, Tripel...

    Gear Dilemma

I think 1600 would be an exellent price with the cobra/sk7, not with the CB-3 set, that should be around 3-400$ cheaper. Maybe shop around for regs on internet, they sometimes go to 30-40 under MSRP, just check if they're official dealers to avoid grey market purchases.

Do I need a backup computer?

The Suunto transmitter is pressure-activated at arount 15 bars. When you have a reg freeze and have to shut your tank for a sec, you lose the wireless connection. Maybe Suunto should do a little reprogramming of the transmitter to shut down after 5 mins of pressure lower than 15 bars and...
