    Good Pay?

Good pay for instructing....? This sounds like a joke in the making or maybe an oxymoron. You'd make more money working at McDonalds than you would instructing. Most people that I know that instruct have a breadwinner job/career and teach on the side because they like to (pay after all is...

    Diving Books

I have done a search for many books at my favorite bookstore and scuba books are sometimes hard to come by: as in, they are out of print, even when they are realtively young. I don't think that publishers make a lot of money on diving books and do a short run and discontinue them. Just...

    What's wrong with this picture?

While there seems to be a lot of attention directed at the age at which one can be certified, the standards that are in place for that process, and the parental permission, what disturbs me is the instructor in this situation just as much as the other topics. I don't know the whole story and...

    assembly of regulator

The recommendation that you will get is to take it to the LDS and ask them to assemble it and test its functionality. They may or may not charge a nominal fee for doing so, but this is a good way to start a relationship with them even if you didn't patronize them originally. However, the...

    Hammerheads Club

For those wondering about the HammerHeads, check out the webby: Hammer Heads To answer your question I think that we need more information: what exactly is the issue(s) at hand with the MN Chapter? As I am not (yet?) affiliated with them, feel free to post or PM me. The Hammer Heads in...

What would you consider your level to be?

To paint a more accurate picture? The list above might be a good start, however I know at least one person with a bunch of cards that can't dive worth a damn. A stack of cards does not a diver make. More importantly: how many dives a year, how many dives total, how much time underwater...

Any Ice Divers Out There ?

Why does one need cave diving to dive under ice?? I can understand the wreck diving argument, but cave seems pretty extreme to me. I would like to thank all of the above respondants; I also like to say there are quite a few crazy people out there (other than cave divers) :D I am enjoying...

    Are you a stroke?

I am a stroke, partly because I do not (yet) subscribe to the DIR philosophy. However, I am always open to suggestions and have tried many; some work for me some against. I am in agreement with Scottri: I don't want to be spending my time arguing about what is right and what is not, how long a...

    Rescue Diver.. Are You One???

Does Rescue certified mean that you are trained to handle a rescue of someone in distressed?? Just a curious question, because while the Rescue course may teach you the confidence to handle many situations, I don't believe that it qualifies you to handle rescuing that say the Fire Dept. does or...

When you find an item while diving, do you try and locate the owner?

I attempt to find the owner. I was on a dive this past summer in the Caymans and found a very nice UK pistol style dive light right off the shore of where I was staying. I reported that I had found a dive light to the dive staff so that if someone came looking for one they could get it back...

    Queston for PADI instructors

 Well, I've attempted to post a couple of times now and nothing happened, so we'll try this computer instead. . . . . PADI has been making many changes to their curriculums over the past two years; some good, some bad, but the thing that PADI has done is given the instructor power...

What magazines do you read / recommend?

Dive Training. Good information, and even with all the knowledge and experience I have I continue to get something out of the magazine. They seem to give new slants to information that is very useful and they do it without too many ads. Rodales. Attitude and some good articles and opinions...

Do you dive with a compass?

 Compass ?? Oh, is that the thing on my dresser ?? I use the compass in my head mostly because the places that I normally dive have high iron content and tend to mess up the compass. However, if I do use it, I usually have it on the wrist, but mostly it stays at home.

    Mask Clearing

UP, AGA Gold? I have used an AGA and love 'em, but I needed the lens insert of the Ocean Reef. It works well, but I think that the AGA breathes a little nicer. Of course I practice removing the FFM and replacing with a regular mask.....carry an extra mask when I dive in a pocket. OOA...

    Nosebreather!

Mask fit seems to continue to come up, and I concur in most respects. I too breathe out through my nose; call it reflex. My mask does not leak without a hood. However, with my dryhood on my drysuit, whenever I exhale through my nose, it builds up in the hood. As the dive progresses, the hood...

    Certification

Hmmm....This question comes up from time to time from people seeking out this new and exciting activity that everyone here embraces. While I agree that the instructor is the most important part of the equation (if the instructor teaches you poor information you'll be a poor diver, if you...

    Mask Clearing

I have been working on that alternative orientation mask clearing thing for a number of years now and have yet to get it to work in any other position other than vertical. I guess I will have to keep trying.....although with a FFM, flooding is not usually a problem :D

    What stops you from diving?

What good replies :D I have to take Spydertek's slant and say, while good responses, the real question that I saw was what STOPS you from diving, not what PREVENTS you from diving. And, I think that at the top of my list is one doesn't find it fun anymore for whatever reason: burn out due...
