The latest edition of Scuba Diving magazine says its best to dive first thing in the morning for the goliath grouper aggregation dives. Any truth to this? Seems like afternoon dives would be OK too.

If it’s in Scuba Diving magazine, it must be true.

That thing is still around? Did they review the ‘top 10’ regulators, BCs or wetsuits this month? Or maybe ‘top computers’ with no mention of Shearwater?

Joking aside, it doesn’t matter in my experience. However, this time of year mornings are typically calmer than afternoons due to the frequent afternoon thunderstorms. But that has nothing to do with the grouper.

Remember that all the captains talk on the marine radios with up to the minute conditions reports. In the morning it's virgin territory and we take our chances based on stale info from the previous day(s). Fish Move !! But if you dive in the afternoon, you will have MULTIPLE reports up and down the coast from boats that have divers splashing immediately. I like afternoon dives because someone else already did all the scouting work for me and it's pretty much a guaranteed hit. What's even more important than hearing "where to Go " is also that critical knowledge of "where NOT TO GO "

So.... Looks to be morning dives.. now talk of afternoon?

Nope. Dive haven't changed. The charters for the official "GG meet up" have been set above. Now, if you want to get in additional GG dives, by all means do!! I know I have scheduled additional trips.

Looking at the morning Sept. 11
Fun..

Sorry for mis-directing the topic. I'm on the Sep 11th Morning dives also. I'm thinking about double dipping & doing the afternoon also if a radio report comes in that they witnessed active GG mating at other than the sites we will visit on the official SB morning trip.

Afternoons work. Or on the second dive after limiting on lobsters on the first dive

I personally prefer mornings because then I am fresh with only minimal aches and pains; the seas are typically calmer; and when you are done you have time to get fills, dinners, etc, and still hit the sack at a reasonable hour.

Anyways I am mostly booked up, I am going to dive with JDC Sunday, and Monday mornings as well. I tested my rec gear as I haven't used it since the last Goliath dives, it all seems to work. So I am pretty much ready. It is a pity I couldn't afford better lights before this trip thanks to the economy slowing down.

Just booked Sunday sep 11 two tank Goliath dive with Jupiter dive center. Looking forward to it again this year.

Well drat it all. I have a commitment in the keys the day before the Sept dive.. have to bow out.. drat drat drat
