I just picked up a couple of used Oceanic computers from ebay (for around 100 bucks each) for students to use. I still teach tables but standards for SDI require a computer and I have been letting students use my Shearwater Perdixes. I've decided that since it's unlikely they will choose to spend nearly a grand on their first computers, having the Oceanic Veo 100, 180, and 200 will give them nice, simple computers they can see buying after the class from whomever they choose to.

Computer and something like a Timex Ironman for "backup".
I wouldn't even bother with the "backup" for a recreational dive(direct access to the surface) unless you just like wearing a watch.

I will say a computer.

Make sure you can read it in the conditions you dive. If VT is like hear or your coming into the northern Atlantic you need a bigger lit screen in order to read it, the peregrine listed above is nice in this area. If your only planning on flying clear warm water than a smaller one will work.

Part of the reason for a computer is right now your only going to 30 feet but I can pretty much guarantee you will change your mind (when I started I said summer only and shallow) now I dive year round and have done deep dives.

A computer you can grow into rather than outgrowing.

Most, if not all, of my diving will be docks, moorings and swimming areas in the 10 to 30 foot depth range.

"Most" is not "all" so an inexpensive PDC is justifiable. Less than 30' shouldn't require more than an SPG, if that. Docks and moorings have a high entanglement risk by monofilament fishing line so keeping adequate reserve to extricate yourself is important. That justifies an SPG or alternate air source — and a good cutting device or two.

Well, things often happen in serendipitous ways. Ended up finding a new Suuto Vyper Nova with transmitter for $325. So that goes a long way to solving the problem as it it air integrated along with compass. Will really clean up my BC LOL.

Thanks for all the input!

I used dive watches in the past, but too often left the winder out and they flooded. For a variety of reasons I have used dive timers for years. However, as others have said, many useful DC's are cheap, useful and can have a gauge mode if you want to.

...and serendipity bit me in the arze.

Turns out that "deal" I found was misrepresented.

It was not new, it was not a NOVO and the transmitter is dead.

Turns out it was a Viper air and it was used and not put away clean. It's not shot by any stretch of the imagination but the buttons have rust, you can see the salt water spots on the crystal, and it looks like it was dragged across the bottom too.

I suspect the transmitter problem is simply a battery, but the seller swears he had it serviced and everything was just fine and it was only dived with four times.

Certainly not the definition of new in anybody's book and the seller won't even acknowledge that he misrepresented the item

Anyhow, I only paid 350 for and I'm thinking for 350 it's still a pretty good deal even if I do have to replace the battery in the transmitter.

What do you guys think??

Make sure both recalls were done.
