I have been diving a G2 for about 7 years. I use AI and have recently upgraded to the new transmitter. I plan on getting a solo dive certification and need a backup computer. While I am not totally impressed with the Luna 2, it is AI and will receive from my current transmitter, and assume its using the same algorithm as my G2. I am part of the SP PPL program. Anyone have any strong reason I should not go with the Luna 2AI? I am getting older so my eyes are not as great, so something like the Aladin 2 would prob be out. I suppose a SW or Scubapro console might work, but a bit more pricy. BTW I do not do tech/deco dives (not intentionally anyway). Thoughts?

I’m pretty conservative on my solo dive plans; and I have an SPG to back up the AI on my solo rig. So, I just run a 1st gen Mares Quad as a backup for my AI Shearwater. I went for reliability and readability over feature parity with my primary. But if your solo diving is closer to the edge of recreational limits, you may want to lean towards tech diver redundancy and 2x your computer

The Luna 2.0 is a decent recreational dive computer. I've been using one since last August. My only complaint is visibility out of the water. It's not as bright as pictures show. No problems in the water.

Thanks for the response. I actually don't have any plans to solo dive - but I want the cert and plan, especially on deeper dives (I frequently dive wrecks off NC), to carry redundant air and other gear. This is because I don't have any local regular dive buddies, my wife doesn't dive, and I often find myself diving with randomly assigned dive buddies... who frequently are less than conscientious about being a good dive buddy... so I am essentially diving solo. I do use an SPG already. I will probably end up going with the Luna, even though I hate the color :)

Thanks for the response, I'm a lot more worried about in the water than out :) - I will likely end up getting one, esp due to the recent price drop.

Please don't buy this one. It is a terrible computer, and SP will probably phase it out soon.

The G3 is excellent and very readable. LUNA 2 AI is great, also. I'd get the LUNA 2 AI, not the non-AI version.
