This is a excellent option, especially at $500 (half off when added to cart) and for all of the daily wear features. Garmin has a full featured dive log and they continuously improve it.

This cost me some money, thank you

A consideration is buying a computer from a LDS. I had a computer go sideways. It had me at 10’ long after I had surfaced. I took it into the LDS and the owner got on the phone to the manufacturer and sent it in. I got a new computer out of that. The thing is that the LDS often has more influence than you do with the manufacturers.

Another vote for the Deep 6 Excursion.

Inexpensive but fully capable for your needs right now and for the foreseeable future.

If you become consumed with diving and want to upgrade to a more complex computer, the Excursion will rotate nicely into back up computer duty. It's a small footprint on the wrist. Other computers, not so much.

. . . I found Mares Puck Pro+ on Amazon for $170 (the price is $199 now on the Mares Amazon store). I found the USB cable on eBay for $15 and it downloads into Subsurface.

The Mares Puck Pro+ (or even the regular Mares Puck Pro) is a great computer for the price. My son and I have been diving ours for 6 years now, and it's very capable. I now also have a Shearwater Perdix 2, and usually dive with both computers. While the Perdix has more bells & whistles (for about $1,000 more), with the Puck Pro set to the least conservative setting there's really not much difference at all in dive times for regular recreational diving. $155 shipped from Divers Supply:

As much as I'd love a Shearwater Peregrine, at this point in my diving I just didn't want to spend $550 on a computer. I found Mares Puck Pro+ on Amazon for $170 (the price is $199 now on the Mares Amazon store). I found the USB cable on eBay for $15 and it downloads into Subsurface.

I agree that the Mares Puck Pro+ is a great little dive computer. Have been using one for years. You can change the battery yourself when necessary. Has a backlight and lots of features such as Nitrox. Will sound an alarm if you do dumb stuff (go too deep on your Nitrox, surface too fast, etc.).

Find something top notch used for resale when you stop diving

I would recommend not skimping on a computer. For a piece of diving equipment you are putting your faith into as far as staying within the limits and managing if you don’t, it would be wise to use something that is from a reputable brand that does everything you want it to.

I use Shearwater exclusively, too shelf equipment, service and their office is close by.

Very new to diving and I am looking to buy my own dive computer. I'm looking for a cheaper one (450$ and below) that has app compatibility to upload dive logs. If anyone has any experience with this your shared knowledge would be greatly appreciated! I am currently looking at the oceanic GEO/VEO 4.0.
Not cheap, but quality beats all in the world of diving. Go Shearwater- they make the best computers in the game today and have A+ customer service. A Peregrine is perfect for recreational diving. I fully concur with Newman Diver.

Do NOT get a Puck. It works and is capable, but it is a barebones piece of equipment with a poor UI and a small non-color screen that is impossible to read in adverse conditions without manually activating the back-lighting (you’ll be amazed how much of a pain this is), while Shearwater products have incredible UI and are constantly backlit. I would not recommend it for anyone who does any diving beyond a 40 foot reef dive once or twice a year. If you are looking to dive regularly you’ll save money by skipping it altogether because you will probably end up replacing it. Other folks like it so take my opinion for what it’s worth but I personally would not recommend it.

I use MacDive for logging and Shearwater products sync just fine with it.

Well ended up not actually being in stock so I am getting my money back. Sadly ordered extra charger and band from Garmin after initial order confirmation:-(
