After this dive season in Canada, I'm going to retire my old Scubapro MK20/G500 reg (or might still use it for warm waters) since it froze on me at 8 degrees C water. So my next reg I want to get for Canadian waters should be bomb proof - okay I know no such thing but I want the best cold water reg I could get.

So I narrowed my choices to the following three cold water regs since they were all US Navy tested I believe.

Apeks MTX-RC
Mares Abyss Navy ii
Poseidon xStream

If anyone here has experience with any of the above in cold water or better yet, had a chance to compare them in cold water, I would appreciate any feedback.

Diaphragm for sure.
I've been using Apeks FST's on OC Doubles for way to many years never had an issue.
On my RB I use SP Mk17's... same as above.
Bailout deco bottles have Halcyon pistons which are made by SP and a clone of the Mk25, never had issues with those and if you r in Can they are a very cost effective alternative

Hello cleung,

Poseidon, Jetstreams, northern Pacific, no issues, ever!

I own two sets for doubles, two sets for sling bottles, and one backup set, fantastic cold water performance!

Rose.

My Apeks XTX50 has been in Tobermory (41F) with no issues. But it’s not on your list.

I would be willing to pay a bit more for the higher level Apeks, the one on my list just to feel a bit more secure

8C is not freeze up temps for that reg at all

Couple of other things not identified:
You were breathing like a freight train
Diving deep air (which has a much higher adiabatic cooling factor than trimix)
or
You had a wet fill.

My suspicion is your gas was wetter than you realize.

I don't know about these other factors but I don't recall breathing that hard since it was only at Humber Bay in Toronto with about 30 feet depth. I knew it wouldn't be too hard to get up top and to shore either. It was just a major inconvenience since I had to abort the dive and this was the first time I experienced a freeze

I have used DS4's with TX and ATX second stages for many years in The Great Lakes and Newfoundland with temperatures down to 0c in Newfoundland late Spring. I have also used them on a trip to Greenland and Northern Labrador. Zero issues.

Does anyone know if Poseidons would be difficult to service in the GTA Toronto-Mississauga area?
Aquasub in Richmond Hill can service Poseidons

So far my XTX200 has been great in cold waters. Might be worth a look at.
