There was an interesting thread on here a while back "cutting the cord" that got my interest. I need a new primary light for wreck diving (burn time about 2-4 hours ) and so far have checked out the Sola and the Dive Rite. Both look great so I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with any of these? or perhaps there may be further recommendations?

Thanks in advance .

why do you need such long burn time? Both of them are idiotically overpriced for what they are. The LX20 realistically puts out no more light than any of the other lights with the XML-U2 emitters, and the Sola's are just stupid expensive. Better to get a couple of the cheap backup lights that are like $50 each and just swap batteries between dives.

Other option is to go with something like the UWLD with the mini-wreck can and helmet mount it for hands-free use.

Look at the thread on the $25 dive lights we all are diving and love... 5000 LM ....

Jim...

Why bother with that light? Only throws 700 lumen out the front and costs $800

Grab 3 of these, each with the same light output, get a spare set of batteries and call it a day. With wreck diving you're not needing the light nearly as long per dive as in a cave so the 80 minute burn time works perfectly fine. Carry 3 of them, if one burns out, fire
a second one up and swap the batteries over when you get to the surface.

Or these if you want to spend $50 and can accept a mag-ring for on/off instead of a button.

If you're going to bother with a can, at least get something with more output than the backup lights...

You guys are fast! the 2-4 burn time was just to indicate that I don't need something like a canister light with 10 hours, I could easily settle for a 70-90 min burn.

@AJ - I did check out the LM stuff and I'm a fan (using their reels) but I'm looking for a cordless option as a primary... Of course they do have the 2w and 3w handheld backups as well.

Honestly? I'd just get a few of the good backup lights and call it good. Cave Adventurers is about to get some new ones in in a few weeks that are going to be priced quite nicely and are similar to the Hogs. I'd get maybe 3-4 of them, maybe 2 video, 2 spot, a full second set of batteries for them, and call it good. That's what I've been doing in the salty stuff instead of taking my can with me, only use that for the extra burn time in the caves. All of that will come out to less than half of the lx20, and about the same price as the Sola 800 with the same light output and 4 lights instead of 1....

If I may,

This definitely looks like a possibility and close to what I'm looking for. Would be cool though if it had a hi and low setting since it's so powerful. Thanks.

Yes, I have the Dive Rite LX 20. My husband and I got a very nice deal on a pair, so we said what the heck, and bought them. There are cheaper options out there, like the Big Blue lights (they really do pack a punch!). But Dive Rite has always been good to us, and I liked the idea of giving them business so they will continue to be there for us in the future. I am goofy that way.

Anyway, we used the lights for the first time last week in the Mexican caves. I liked it very much. Having been used to a DR 10W HID canister for the last several years, the lack of cord was absolutely liberating - especially in sidemount configuration, where the cord coming out of my bum was frankly annoying. I also appreciated the greater light output. There were times, especially as we were traversing "black" cave, that I would have appreciated blindingly powerful lights, but then I remembered how much I hated being followed by them (I have a buddy who is a videographer, and having him behind you is like being followed by a Mack truck on a country highway at night), and started appreciating my own light again. I did four hour dives on full power, and the light behaved beautifully - you're supposed to get a blinky warning as the battery gets low, but ours never did. The quick release mount (QRM) glove was also comfortable, but I was a bit worried about the security of the light on the glove - especially as I was tugging at gear and trying to get everything adjusted and battened down on my shakedown dives. My husband got around that issue by attaching a bolt-snap to the other end of the light with some cave line and clipping it to a thick bungee bracelet around each of our wrists. It worked fine.

There's a lot to be said for buying cheaper and more powerful lights with shorter burn times, and bringing a couple with you into the water when one dies, but I love my DR. No regrets here.
