If I remember right, last year (or two years ago) in Europe, a tank was dropped on a dock. The valve sheared off and it shot across, and hit a diver in the chest. I believe it was a fatal accident. It is under the accidents and incidents forum if I recall.

Hmmmm... did the valve actually shear off, or did the threads strip and the valve shot off?

Hi all, ok so no lube on the o-ring just on the thread. But what type of thread lube is it? and where would I purchase some from? Would the local dive shop most likely have this to sell or in their own maintenance workshop?

A bit of Christolube or other O2 compatible lube is fine. I would not use silicon. A dive shop should be able to get/have some.

you need to be aware that if you take an empty tank to a shop for a fill they will require a VIP on the tank prior to filling it.

if you are unsure of the process, take it to a local shop have them VIP the tank and o2 clean it and put the new valve on.

they should be able to do it while you wait.

You can pick up a little adapter for about $4 which will allow you to bleed a little pressure in from another tank using your high pressure hose from reg to reg.

any shop worth going to will not fill an empty tank because it more than likely has been contaminated due to lack of internal pressure.

you bring me an empty tank and it is getting a VIP before it gets filled. if you don't like it take it somewhere else.

That is why you pressurize it from another tank before taking it in for a fill.

I made one after getting the "no pressure" run around. Works great.
