We are going to Cozumel in January and was wondering if the cab drivers still took dollars or you had to have pesos. I know the goverment changed to only taking pesos for sevices. Just wondering.

We take some of both - what I find is that when I'm using pesos, I tend to spend more money (it seems like play money).

That being said, the dollar works nearly everywhere (taxis included) except at some of the small food joints back in the hood.

Have Fun!!!

Cab drivers will take both, but take lots of small bills.....they never have change.

What we usually do, is to do our initial shopping with dollars at Mega or Chadraui. They will have their exchange rates posted, usually close to the bank exchange rates & get our change in Pesos. Use the pesos at smaller merchants & shops, as they will usually exchange at 10/1, as it is easier math, so you get a little better value paying in pesos as opposed to dollars.

Also, make sure you don't have any bills that are torn or written on. Many will not take those.

We always bring dollars and use them for most of the trip, if we need more money, we usually get pecos from an ATM and always make sure we have some dollars for the last day, just in case we need cash on the plane or for anything after getting back to the U.S.

pecos?!?

We use pesos except for dive fees, which are usually priced in dollars. We get a better exchange rate using ATM's on the island, and don't have to travel with large amounts of money. Note that at the tourist shops in the zocalo they'll always try to haggle in dollars even when we say we only have pesos - they make money on the conversion.

Yes, pretty much everyone will accept dollars. Would you accept pesos at home, though? It's Mexico. Use Mexican currency.

The wise advice is take pesos, it's Mexico

The wise advice is to take lots of ones and some fives and tens (dollars).
And twos. Ask your bank.

It's not like they work hard enough for the measely pitance most leave as tips for the serving crowd, might as well make them go to their cambios and do their own exchange. Of course most take dollars, but dont get upset if some dont, that's all.
