Hi folks...

just wondering if there is any advantage to sign up for DAN for Canadians? Are we automatically covered under our medicare for diver accidents? Or do we need supplemental insurance?

I will sign up for DAN (or other notable insurance) when travelling abroad though.

thanks for your help!

Vancouver Coastal Health - New hyperbaric chamber provides specialized treatment at VGH

Canada Health Act - Frequently Asked Questions

What health care services are insured by the provinces and territories?

Under the Canada Health Act, provincial and territorial health insurance plans are required to provide coverage to their residents for all medically necessary hospital and physician services on a prepaid basis.

What health care services are not covered by provinces and territories?

Services not covered are generally those considered not to be medically necessary. Some examples include: cosmetic surgery, health examinations for employment purposes and tattoo removal. However, there can be exceptions; for example, the removal of concentration camp tattoos or reconstructive cosmetic surgery following a trauma.

Thanks!! That's a good help!!

hmmm...so is there an advantage to joining PADI membership and DAN? Apart from the magazines?

How about a medical emergency when out of the country?

A friend of mine got bent in Bonaire, the costs for the chamber would have paid his DAN membership for many, many years and the amount that Ontario will reimburse him is a pittance.

Not every service is covered by the Provinces, so it certainly pays to understand specifically what is not covered and what the DAN insurance will supplement.

I know from experience here in Alberta that emergency transportation (ie. ambulance - air or ground) is not covered by Alberta Health. Supplemental insurance of some type has to cover that unless you are going to pay out of pocket. My wife's ambulance ride in Canmore two weeks ago was about $400.

Get it now, it's for a year.
You'll have it when you travel, one less thing to bother about before leaving.
As Hawkwood said, medicare doesn't cover everything,.
When DCS is concerned a quick response is necessary and an air evac is not always
covered by government plans.

Hospital charges can be only a small part of the total bill, if anyone needs to be evacuated by aircraft for a diving incident costs can very expensive. US15000 or more depending on where from and to. DAN is supper cheap so why not have it,
