Boating contrabands list:
1. Bananas
2.Women
3.whistles (or is it Whistling "verb"?)

It is the verb.

And yet copious amounts of alcohol are often consumed on board.:shakehead:

Maybe we'd need to bring a Gremlin to close proximity of the bike to test whether he was being repelled or not?

Do you have me on ignore?! Answer the women thing a few times already. As long as they're not kidnapped with a naval force in pursuit, women are not bad luck.

Whistles are fine, encouraged on BCs and PFDs - just don't blow them onboard unless an emergency. Man/woman overboard would suffice I think.

I asked a restaurant owner about controlling fruit flies and she said she knew more from when she raised exotic birds which required ripe fruit. She said that the water and liquid detergent didn't work but adding bleach to the water would. I remembered that I did have bleach in the water I left in the sink last night.

Why not oranges in your bathtub? Potato chips in your wallet?

the oranges caused me to slip in the tub and hurt myself. the potato chips turned into potato crumbs, soon thereafter i found myself covered in ants. what else do you recommend? :D

...When I owned a boat, I allowed bananas, and nothing bad ever happened. However the reason I no longer own a boat is female, so I would be careful, were I you...:D

When I'm very good, she lets me drive the boat, and afterwards occasionally brings me a beer while I wash it or work on the engine :D

On the mainland, I'd have no problem with a banana on the boat. Bananas are grown commercially here, and lots of people have banana trees in their back yards. But here in Hawaii the are strong beliefs that are in fact tradition. No bananas on boats, and actually no bananas if going on land trips (not as widely practiced). Ti leaves carried for luck on trips, etc.

As a sailor I think it's actually fun to observe most (not all, women on ships are fine) of the "old" traditions, and as far as bananas on boats and other Hawaiian traditions my feeling is: "When In Rome..."

Respect the culture, and obey the captain :D

No, no. Those were examples of things that cause bad luck!

I'm afraid the only thing that can save you now is the fine hair off a bat's wing... (unless, of course, you're willing to dress up in a chicken costume and break duck eggs over your head.)

Thanks, but I'd rather we didn't. Just in case. :14:

My problem with "indisputable scientific evidence" is that what we knew 100 years ago is not what we know now, nor is it what we will know 100 days, weeks, months or years fom now. For me, I'll keep a little magic in my life.

now you tell me!

hmm...i've a bit of a fear of bats (what with the whole rabies thing and all), but chicken costume and duck eggs sounds promising...you sure i can't just rid myself of the bad luck by eating a banana?
