It works. The skins get darker but the fruit is ok, and no Fruit Flies

that is what we usually do (in Egypt) we never let bananas lay on a side for long time storage - try it, I'm sure you'll thank T1

What does that accomplish? I've read that they may last longer, but how would it stop the Fruit Flies from hatching out? (FYI: All bananas have Fruit Flie maggots on the skin.) I'd forgotten about that idea, meant to try it so they'd ripen more gently and uniformly, but the buggers will still hatch

No, this isn't a joke: there is an art project to put a high-altitude helium balloon in the shape of a banana into the sky over Texas.

Artist César Saëz and his team are already into the engineering design phase to determine exactly how this 300m-long airship will be constructed. They plans to fly it up to 30-50Km around Baja or Sorona, TX, in late 2008.

Is it legal? Is it safe? Does it belong in Texas? These questions remained to be answered, but we can definitely say it is "art".

the fruit is not OK - it gets dehydrated! (bananas, peach, Pears, Apples, ...can't remember the rest!) of course each has different time span.

the bug will hatch eventually given ample time, but at least you can delay them; they seem only to hatch at a certain degree of ripening of the fruit.

better strategy pick as small quantity for the daily use on the way home.

Well, by the time the buggers are showing up, the banana doesn't have much time left before it'll be used in something. I'll keep that in mind, tho - TY.

Ha! I don't go to town every day, and when I do I don't want to stop every trip for bananas, but I'm already spreading them out as I can reasonably. Guess I'll keep hiding them in the fridge when the flies do emerge, and keep the peelings and coffee grounds air tight for composting. Was hoping someone had a better control.
