Wide open? No. However, research by the US Olympic team showed that slightly spreading your fingers improves thrust in the water if only by a small percentage. Then again, Olympic races are all about small percentages.

Agreed, just enough to trap water between them, but not wide open like the fins!
 
That is all anecdotal evidence and not fact! My story is at 55 years old I finished third on my SO qualifications with a par of Dive-Rites Blades, so? It is still physics and when a design works you see it in nature! Fish with split fins die! No fish or animal has split fins! Otters didn't develop split fins they developed webbing! Not split! When a fish dies its fins split! Case three: Cave and camera work are not done with split fins! Split fins destroy the silt on the bottom and do not provide control for shooting with a video or still camera! They provide you with less resistance and you probably, as many do, move your lags faster! That is not the same as efficiency! Every action has an opposite and EQUAL reaction! It's the law!

Based strickly on the length of the blade and the bending effect of the blades and the resultant Mass Moment of inertia etc. splits in many cases are much more efficient and in fact hold a load more efficiently.

If you would like to explain your hypothesis on real technical basis please have at it.

Just for reference I have a pair of Apollo Bios, 2 set of Atomics (full foot and open heel), a pair of OMS Slipsteams and oh yea, an old pair of Mares Quatros.

For me each has its own advantage depending on the diving objective and kick types one might plan to use during a dive. Without a doubt (and proven by many fins test) the Bios are over all the most efficient in the water - even frog kick to frog kick you move father, faster with the Bios. The OMS fins are powerful but not efficient, and are the choice for back kicks etc and will not stir up the muck or silt.

I know it's the "How I feel generation" but speed has no sensation! you are traveling at 24 thousand miles an hour on the surface of the planet! you can't feel it! As far as lift, it doesn't propel your boat or plane forward! I am figuring out that your eduction in these areas is sadly lacking! Your not propelled by lift, my god! A boat and plane prop is a simple leaver! A wedge, not a wing! Call your local Prop shop and learn something before you take your boat in for service! You are not sounding like someone I would trust to pick the pitch on my Prop! So let me get this straight! Rather than listen to what might be a legitimate point you would rather make this personal so you can live in your fairy tale world where lift is propulsion? Right?

The split actually equals the lift. The better models do better, time after time.

They law is pretty clear unlike your above BS statement in red, I am not baffled buy that BS! It was a nice rant though! Meaningless, but nice and the big words might have convinced other split fin owner! BTW where did the inertia come from? Since the way you used it is contradictory to its definition?

I don't know. It has been a long time since I studied aeronautical engineering at Purdue University. And I admit, I changed my major to Civil Engineering. But my understanding is that a prop's porpulsion in fact does function like lift.

Maybe some of the AE's can add.

Cal-Poly where they taught us it is a lever that's why big ships move forward without turning there screws, What is a screw, without having to run high RPMs! It has very little to do with inertia release and pressure difference between surfaces like aerodynamics! Your not giving Purdue a good name! BTW I have some swamp land you might be interested in?
