Pretty please do a Reg Geeks on Mares.

I understand if you want to get a Poseidon one first, but someday?
I'm sorry, folks! Been promising that Poseidon Reg Geeks for a long time. OBE, as they say. I'll be only intermittently here for a bit. Navy's been clamoring for currency training since Brian Sheppard passed away. RIP. I really miss him. And Glynn Palmer has taken on European Huish training and is moving to France, so his contribution is ending. More than I can do by myself. Dive shops - hang in there. We've got a plan.
Heading to Guam this summer and some other places to train some other instructors so we can leverage this solution. But I'll try to find a spot for another RG evening.

And then Mares for sure! One of these days. Thanks for your patience.

Don't you still have a day job as a physician? How on earth do you manage all this?

It is interesting that Head and Huish now own 7 of the 19 brands of regulators I could quickly identify in the US. I apologize for the crudeness of my figure, but I did not intend on sharing it. Each of the brands has several common 1st and 2nd stage combinations, that is the number to the left of the brand name. The numbers to the right of the brand name are the range of list prices for those common pairings. The graph simply shows the range of prices for each brand. Most of them overlap considerably. Atomic Aquatics is the easy winner for most expensive regulators.

Of course, this ignores the other 12 brands I easily identified: Cressi, Deep Six, Dive Rite, Genesis, Halcyon, NEX, OMS, Poseidon, Scubapro. Seac, Sherwood, and Tusa.

I make no claim for the accuracy or completeness of my quick search, I thought it was interesting.

@Mobulai except if you want to sell to commercial then the certification matters, large corps won't bend policy if its written that they only buy regs certified as Norsok U101

apeks isn't the highest performance reg and pretty much nobody claims that, its simple and reliable while having enough performance to handle almost all use cases

its the toyota hilux of regs not an exotic italian sports car that spends more time being repaired than used

Oh, i automobile analogies!
What car would the G250 be? A Volvo 240?
This game always converges up at the same spot, what’s an mk2..

@runsongas The Hilux analogy can go in 2 (or 3) criteria, indestructiblity, repairablity, and ease of service (there’s a difference between the last 2 in my eyes, one is to fix the broken the other is to just maintain)

The repairability of Apeks 1st in my eyes is quite low (non removable volcano), and the ease of service is quite high, except for the Env seal (2 c clamps to open up the env seal vs 1 for a comparable mk17); so I give it a midrange score
The indestructibility (damn that word doesn’t roll off easy) of apeks 2nds is also meh (non square barrels, mid polymer— refer to g250), the Apeks 1st are quite alright, till we reach the situation where the (env seal) transmitter have been reported to fail (maybe an edge case so excludeble)
The hilux is an mk2+r190 in my eyes (thes will run forever even if noone makes anymore service kits (punch HP/LP seats, minimal orings; absolutely indestructible like a cockroach — hence why most rec rental fleets have similar setups, not including @BoltSnap ). I see apeks as an Alpharomeo than a Toyota , but if you do enjoy them then all the power to you

@scubadada didn't scubapro release some limited edition reg that was like 3k and take back the most expensive reg available title from atomic?
I think they already had that record before Atomic, albeit a commemorative item that wasn’t for public sale: the gold plated g250/mk10 that was given to „platinum shops“; but yes they pulled off the same move for the mk25(/a700 was it?) 50YA(or 60?)
