Tecdivegear shows $629 for a nitrox version. The Petrel is not available in nitrox only format, it's a trimix computer. The equivalent Black is the same price. I see what you're saying, that if all you need is nitrox the Black is cheaper, but that's still not an even comparison. Maybe Shearwater will release a nitrox-only version at a cheaper price to compete with the Black. Though at this point there's no Black to compete with, they don't exist in the wild.

They do exist. At least in their tradeshow booth! The Petrel is available as a Nitrox/Rec mode computer. Trimix will be an upgrade.

I have no idea where your facts and figures are coming from. The Petrel comes only as a full-unlocked trimix, oc/CCR computer. And show me where you can buy a Black. A model on display does not equal a product you can buy. They simply do not exist in consumer's hands.

I believe the Black bottom timer is $429 and the Trimix software upgrade is $180, so $609.

Some people have the bottom timer and the EANx upgrade at least, but not many.

Well, tridacna, their response is very disappointing, as usual. Wonder what Mike will find out...

Bottom timer only, $429: xDeep BLACK scuba diving bottom timer computer

Air/Nitrox only, $629: xDeep Nitrox Computer for Scuba Diving BLACK

Trimix, $829: Full Trimix Dive Computer BLACK by xDeep

If purchased separately, the bottom timer to nitrox upgrade is $200. Nitrox to trimix is $200. Bottom timer straight to trimix is $400.

Nope. Piotr and Sebastian both said that we need to only buy the correct software upgrade from the bottom timer straight to Trimix. I even asked Sebastian to clarify, and he did. Check earlier in this thread.

Yes. This is what TecDiveGear said:

TecDiveGear:
True, you can upgrade from BT to TMX at one shot, no middle EANx installation step needed, obviously if you have purchased right software upgrade key (from BT to TMX) since EANx to TMX key version will require you to have EANx already installed.

And THIS is the key he speaks of, right there on his website, for $400:

Why is this so seemingly complicated? There are a dozen retailer websites to reference for the prices. New, the xDeep will be less expensive than a petrel. The Petrel firmware upgrade to include the "rec mode/EANx only" is free and will not detract from CC/tri-mix capabilities. Comparatively speaking, the fully upgraded xDeep Black is the only product that matches the Petrel, and it will be less expensive when it becomes available.

Unless you shop around. You can find them for $800 every once in a while.

But all that aside, there are two points I'd like to mention:
-I'm not trusting my life to a computer with no proven track record. Yeah, it looks great on paper, but I'm not going to be the guinea pig for it.
-The price difference doesn't matter. I'll give you $3000 if you can get an xDeep to me before my new Petrel gets in. Two weeks you say? It was released July 26, 2013 wasn't it?
