It sounds like you and I may actually work for the same company. I have to go through a multi-phase bid' process via the company scheduling software, and all the choice traditional holidays are quickly exhausted, so I never schedule a trip around any major holiday as there's too much competition for those days off. No changes at all are permitted by the time we're in Q4 of the year for vacation days that same year. Phase 1 is seniority based, the other 'phases' are a free-for-all, first come, first served. After people have grabbed up all the major holidays, and then most of the Mondays and Fridays as well (creating long weekends) the bulk of the remaining 'unclaimed' days off will be assorted blocks of Tuesdays through Thursdays, can't build a dive vacation around such 'scraps'. Under these conditions I'm VERY conservative/careful about vacation scheduling during hurricane season, or 'norte season'.

Dear Scubafanatic,

Sounds like May--June is perfect for you. Early May might have a small norte but not very likely. Later the warmer!

For Cozumel, the main time frame I avoid is winter/early spring as it's both 'high season' and 'El Norte' season. I'd say my preferred times are late spring/early summer (as you indicated) or late summer/early fall. With respect to Cozumel, my main fear isn't hurricanes, it's 'El Norte'.......'El Norte' is much more probable than a hurricane in Cozumel.

Claiming that the odds favor Coz getting hit in the next year is silly. Weather statistics are much more general, never that specific.
In January 2001 there were 21 out of 31 days that the port was closed to diving at some level. There were many people who spent their entire vacation there landlocked—because of nortes (north winds). In the so called high season there are nortes every month and the water is cold. In September and October there is virtually no chance of a norte, the water is still warm and the crowds are thinned out. May June is pretty good as well.
I love coming for my BD in late August after most children are back in school. No nortes, no crowds, warm water, etc. If a hurricane does happen to threaten the island, changes are easy, and I do take trip insurance when I leave the US - so the one year that I bluffed a major hurricane expected to hit, then turned around and left the island quickly, was a poor call on my part. It did veer south after I left, but I should have canceled before coming. That risks are rare.

Doesn't it rain more in the fall? I have been down in May and September in recent years, and they were good trips - but I hate flying across Texas in springtime with our local storms disrupting air travel, and I did get rain more in September. Eh, it was a warm rain anyway.

Second week of December...no hurricanes.....no kids...not cold...no wet suit.....Tequila abundant! :)

Winter plane travel, if you get to the airport ok in the snow, and north winds. This is where I was for north fronts: Maps and Radar | Weather Underground

Eh, travel is an adventure in itself. The challenges have their rewards.

Blah, Blah, Blah, May June or September/October is it. The odds work out well even if I had a fly land in my taco last month.

I was agreeing with you mostly. December used to seem like a good time to get away, but winter weather happens in the tropics, too - differently, if you can get thru the blizzards to get there.

I think January 12th to the 18th is the best time, I just booked a flight.

I would agree that those are wonderful months...except for the fact that there are no direct flights operating from Toronto to Coz during those months. Bummer!!! I'd have to do the bag drag!

For the record, I do the bag drag a lot with 2, 70 lb bags of contraband (stuff you need to dive). I'm 70 years old and get by so don't whine!
