ISLE ROYALE, Mich. (WJMN) — A Wisconsin man is dead after an incident while SCUBA diving on a shipwreck near Isle Royale, according to a spokesperson for Isle Royale National Park.
According to a release, 70-year-old John Nousaine of Superior, WI and others were diving from a private vessel Thursday afternoon to the Emperor shipwreck near Isle Royale.
At about 1 p.m., the divers reported an accident they believed to have been deadly to law enforcement. The spokesperson said the rest of the divers and crew reported the accident quickly, but did not speak to the nature of the accident.
A release from the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office said Nousaine was with a charter diving boat.
The Emperor shipwreck is a 525′ steel bulk freighter about 100-150′ under the surface of Lake Superior to the north of the island. It sank in 1947—the most recent of the shipwrecks around Isle Royale, according to the National Parks Service.
