Why the Prejudice about DIR or GUE

Is that something that I will have to find someone to teach me on the side if I choose not to go through the class? I don't have a lot of money for new equipment or classes but I am interested in learning new skills. I am pretty ignorant when it comes to what is involved in DIR or the classes. The prejudice is that it is like joining a cult. Those are not my thoughts but the common misconception.

What violates the posting rules is when people start providing non-DIR answers to those questions. If that's what the originating poster wants, they're best off putting the question out here, where all answers are acceptable.

yeah, it's a fairly easy concept

DIR forum is for DIR answers (even if the question "questions" DIR)

it's not to debate whether the DIR answer is right or wrong, etc.

that needs to be done outside the DIR forum

the idea was (as i understand) to allow a place for DIR discussions to take place free of
every thread turning into an anti-DIR debate

that's my understanding anyway

I agree and I have see the same thing. But all non-DIR people should be lumped together with the lowest demoninator of the sport. I will also conceed that DIR are probably more likely to follow the rules than non-DIR as it your name. But have you never seen a non-DIR person without a dragging console or octo? I know I have, quite a few. Especially those of use who own our own gear. Dragging the stuff bangs it up real quick.

Yes ... the trouble with Internet discussions (particularly this particular topic) is that both "sides" of the issue tend to use very broad brushes. And in so doing, they tend to divide each other into partisan "camps" ... it's why these discussions so frequently fail to convey any real information ...

"Dress for Success" is a book available on the GUE website that has still photos and text which explains the equipment in great detail.

Soggy isn't suggesting that someone might tear the octo diaphram by jumping in the water. He is suggesting... and quite realistically, I might add... that someone might not detect a torn diaphram until after they are in the water. Most folks don't check their octo with negative pressure/air off.

Mouthpieces also tend to split along the zip-tie, and they're a devil to catch on the surface ... but you will notice it when you breathe off them underwater ...

Besides the fact that it's really a personal choice and I hardly see people trying to "convert" anyone, I'd rather dive with someone who has a long hose.
And someone who's actually paying attention not just to their own PSI left, but mine as well.
And who keeps good contact and who has good bouyancy control.
And who _regularly_ practices air shares.
And who plans their dive and then follows that plan.
And who doesn't drag their octo through the sand.
And who doesn't dive with an Air2.


Oh, I'm not DIR, never took any courses, can't claim much about it. But for some reason, the people I dive with seem to end up with BP/W's, long hoses and be lacking snorkels and also don't seem to have alot of stuff dangling around.

Personally, I'm very interested in DIR because it seems to be a well thought out approach that goes beyond gear. I'm hoping to go diving with some folks that follow it (if they'll have me along) someday to see what it's like diving with them. As well, I'm probably going to sign up for DIR-F to find out more about it and to improve my skill level.

So go do your thing. Go dive. Bring your snorkel. And don't take this stuff so personal. It's supposed to be fun

You might want to think through some of this a litle more before trying to make an example of someone else. Then again, you go ahead and dive anyway you want. It's your life, but I would recommend the quick check underwater.

Now that I know this, it's very likely that I will. I no way am I anti-DIR, but when someone makes a blanket statement that one method is superior[whatever the issue, btw, 7' hose, bungee, etc] to another I would justification for that remark. Here it was provided and appreciated.

Most people would be happy to get together and dive with you and answer any questions you may have about DIR. I would recommend trying to find someone who is in your area and see about getting together with them.

Bob: Total aside, do you think it makes much of a difference how deep?
I always test both my primary and my backup on the surface, with my head in the water (gives me a chance to check my mask seal as well). I've never had a problem with my regs, but I'd think that if they are in the water (even at 8") they'd breath wet if there was a problem...
