During one of my DM exercises my instructor had us buddy breath off of his air2 (why? I don't know but I'm guessing he was trying to push me outside of my comfort zone). As a recipient I thought the hose was a bit short, we were fussing around with the reg a bit, but all things considered, it wasn't too bad and still much better than "sucking a fart out of a donkey's arse" if it came down to it.

I don't see why this thread warranted over 400 replies. If you like it, great, but make sure you know how to use it (and please, donate your primary in a real OOA situation).

If you don't like them, so be it, don't use one. But still I'd advise you to be familiar with one in case somebody hands you one in an OOA situation.

If anyone tries to rip my reg out of my mouth, he will be eating his mask. Guaranteed.

So if a panicked OOA diver is desperately in need of air, you think the best course of action is to begin an underwater wrestling match. Got it.

Interestingly enough, I teach my students the opposite. I tell them that is the last place and time you want to be getting into a fight. I tell them to let it go, pick up the alternate, and sort it out when the diver calms down. You obviously have a different approach, but it is one that I wholeheartedly do not endorse.

It sounds reasonable, but can you do that and surface with your macho intact? ;)

swaping spit can get you all kinds of diseases, I read it on the interweb.:D

I understood that he was talking about an OOA diver reaching for my primary regulator. If he is reaching for something else, I would suspect that the OOA signal was just a ruse.

As I said earlier, before we ever get in the water, I make sure everyone knows where my secondary is located and make it very clear that that is the one they are to go for. Not the one I am using.

It's better to use guile, not strength.

I propose simply not using a zip-tie on the primary regulator mouth-piece. If some eerk should try and wrench-steal your primary, just grip your teeth and they'll be left with no mouth-piece. That'll teach 'em.

In their moment of shock, you can swiftly move to your own AAS and kick away.... leaving them with nothing. They gotta learn somehow... and force is never the best option.

You are one sick, devious puppy! I like it!

WHY?

Do you have a problem giving up your primary?

I explain to my dive buddy(s) that they are welcome to any 2nd stage I may have but I prefer they take my primary which is what I will donate if they ask. BTW, I have tried breathing on my wife's Air2 (which she prefers over a conventional octo on a bungee) and it will work but it does make for a bonding moment.

are you arguing that people shouldn't discuss gas sharing before diving?

I have a similar discussion with new buddies, if they need gas, they are to take my primary and only my primary. Going for my backup which is bungeed around my neck will be a waste of time.
