Well if two people are diving the true buddy system it kinda is each others responsibility to make sure that your buddy has easy access to a second stage that is in working order and not on a hose that is too short and/or configuration that is difficult to use and may stress out one or both divers, otherwise it's not the buddy system. I had a buddy a long time ago, the same one that put the snorkel in his mouth instead if his air 2 and got a mouthful if water. Anyway, He used a 32" primary hose because he didn't like the way a 40" hung down on his arm and doing air shares was a nightmare during some classes I took with him. But he insisted that he needed his setup to work for him. Well, make up your mind, either we're diving the buddy system which means your system needs to work for your buddy equally as well as yourself or it's something else. More like two guys diving around each other with rigs that work the best for them and screw the buddy, basically solo. Not that there's anything wrong with that but let's call it what it is.OP has two choices.
1 shut your pie hole and go dive
Or
2 Shut your pie hole and stay on the boat.
Either way, this is a YOU problem, not a buddy problem.
You don't get to dictate someone else's gear configuration for your own comfort.
