I bought a PP 5mm line and used both knots described.

Line works fine, it is smooth and knots are working fine. I found no difference between the 2 knots on this application.

Taut Line knot is not as secure as Midshipman's Hitch or Arrow Knots. Regardless of the knot used, learn to tie and untie it underwater. Ask me how I found out ;-)

Cord length may depend on dive profiles. I like to have enough length so that I can extend my arm and the shoulder fully while still have 1-2" of play in the cord. The arrangement allows me to move the DPV around (e.g., in front of my face or diagonally to the side) when diving overhead.

Diamond braided line for me. I don't know the actual part number, but the one sold by Cave Country Dive Shop seems to be excellent. The stock SUEX cord that came with my DPV was okay.
