My first certification was "YMCA Scuba Diver." There was no such certification as "Open Water Diver" at that time.

BSAC for me, but it wasn't Ocean Diver, that's a relatively recent development. My first qualifaction was 'Novice Diver' (not Novice I or Novice II either, just 'Novice').

NAUI. 1976 dove 6 yrs w/o cert. Local store hired it's first full-time employee and then you had to be certified to buy air. Had to pay his wages I guess.

PADI. The shop closest to me is a PADI shop. I had no idea there were multiple organizations when I decided to get OW certified. I've since added quite a bit more PADI training along with the DAN Diver Emergency Management Provider course.

PADI cause nobody else in the area answered the phone. Have gone thru DM and now doing crossover to NAUI AI/DM. Will continue to work as PADI DM but doing NAUI tech and as soon as I get where I want to be with that and go to instructor I'll either do NAUI or YMCA. My NAUI tech instructor is also a YMCA instructor trainer.

First class, 1993 NAUI OW I not "scuba diver." The ratings at that time were "Open Water I" and "Open Water II" then "Advanced".

PADI was who i learned through way back when. Ok course but bad follow up. I never did a single dive out of my openwater with the store i learnt with. Says a lot for friendly service with a smile.

Yours Truly,
Carl Fallon
