I didn't know until recently that Dive Con was SSI's version of divemaster. I don't think the general diving population looks at them at equals.

They aren't equal. Dive Control Specialist combines Divemaster and Assistant Instructor. It would have been more profitable for SSI to break it into two separate, but it seems their primary motivation isn't money.

Let's just call it Master of Diving. I am a Master Scuba Diver and Master of Diving, like the sound of it?

I think that this is just confusing the issue.

Divemaster is a professional level of recreational SCUBA certification that is named so by those certifying agencies that provide that level of recognition.

When you say Master Diver, it is a different form of SCUBA certification that paralles the Divemaster level of training but is not a recreational SCUBA professional certification.

Furthermore, the original dive organizations, the Royal Navy and the U.S. Navy, both refer to the most experienced and trained divers in their profession as Master Diver. It is possable that the recreational certification agencies coined the term Divemaster to avoid being confused with the Navy's Master Diver rating.

Now for my small dig, if you call yourself a Master of Diving, it leads me to believe you whish you were a Master Diver, but you don't really rate the title. :no

You are correct. Honestly, I would not call myself a Master of Diving ever. I was just using the term in a sentence. I continue to call myself a beginner diver and will do so for at least a couple hundred dives. I believe that every diver can learn something new or different. Even my pals who have thousands of dives continue with the learning process. The terms could be universal, so that all would understand the exact meaning. Even Master Scuba Diver doesn't mean the same between diving agencies. PADI wants 5 PADI only specialties along with the Rescue and mandatory #of dives and SDI wants 8 specialties (accepting other agencies) along with the other requirements. This discussion of Dive Master vs. DiveMaster can go on forever without any resolution. But that is, in part, why we have the Board, to discuss different questions that we wonder about.

What if you are a Divemaster and a Master Diver ? Is one "better" than the other ?
Or should you be a Master Divermaster ? The possibilities are endless...
