Bear in mind that some of the stuff on ebay isn't really selling for those prices. I had a couple of pressure gauges on my watch list. They went for over $80. A few days later, I get a message telling me they have been relisted. Again, I put them on my watch list and watch them sell for $80+. Once more they get relisted. I watched them sell 3 times before I lost interest in it.

What's going on in a situation like that is somebodies buddy or alternate account is bidding up the price with no intention of completing the sale.

I have to agree with you there. Also,I was bidding on two hard to find Scubapro ring pressure gauges last week. Then they dissapeared!I thought he sold off line.He said he pulled the auctions because the bids weren't high enough.I start my auctions at a certain price. If no one bids no harm. But I hate it when a seller cancells and sells off line after someone has bid.I have never done that and never will.:cool2:

I'd like a link to that auction that went for $200.

A sentiment that has been echoed about the value of gear is that its "worth whatever it is to a collector." I'd also like to echo that eBay is the best place for your items given the wider audience it gets. However, some days you get lucky, and some days not. Check the auction you saw the gauge sell for $200, and see what the next bid was. If it was legit, maybe that person is still looking for that particular gauge.

I've purchased a few things from FleaBay, but as a rule I only buy from those folks I know. I did see a SeaHunt mask go for $700 a month ago...I though that one was rigged somehow.

I suspect that the bidding WAS rigged...

Makes me question the value of my homemade Sturgil mask...only 40 were made 3 remain and of the three mine is the oldest and since it is stored in an Ammo box in good condition..

A note to all...

For a number of years I was a diving consultant to US Divers and the company dive instructor...I was not an employee of US Divers, I was a consultant and an independent contractor. As I recall my last years with US Divers was in the mid 1970s.

Around that time there was a very serious problem of "Product Shrinkage," AKA products stolen from the company.

I donot recall the exact year when there was an internal sting operation and it was discovered that certain employees would grab finished items off the production line, or in shipping or other areas in the factory, walk over to the machine shop and toss out the only unsecured windows in US Divers. The items would land on the grass next to the spur rail road tracks.

After work they would go have a beer to waite for US Divers to close, then return, walk up the rail road tracks and retrive their loot.

Heads rolled..a good portion of the machine shop, some in shipping, and probably others were dismisssed.

I am not pointing a finger at the "well informed knowledgable poster, aka rocklgnd2b." I do not in any was acuse him of miss deeds...

But his attitude leaves a lot to be desired...

I can tell all of you that Voit B4 mask auction a week ago wasn't rigged. It sold for $700.I know both of the two last bidders. They both wanted it bad.I have seen another in a box sell for that much. There is a mint B4 on ebay right now.I suspect in will go much lower than $700 but who knows.I paid $140 for mine many years ago. They are quite rare. Some people see something sell and think they can get that. They see a double hose reg sell for $1000 and think there's are worth that. They don't consider make, model ,year ect.Just like a car.People over pay for cars also.If you ever want to sell your mask or list it Sam.Please let me know. Thanks Mike.

MIKE,
It was custom made for me by the great Charlie Sturgil so I doubt it...Sam IV will get it.

For you unfamilar with Charlie Sturgil ..FYI
He began diving in 1929 with home made equipment.
He won the 1950 International Spearfishing meet with a pole spear
He was on the back page of SDM Vol #1, NR#1, December 1951
He was an LA Co UW instructor
He designed much of the early equipment we cherish today..

He was one heck of a diver and a dear friend,

You know, I tried one of those Voit "Sea Hunt" masks in the 1950s, and didn't like it at all. The placement of the buckle on the mask skirt dug into my temples, and hurt. So I decided very early that this was not a mask for me. But, $721.99??? Wow, maybe I should have kept mine. ;)
