In Monterey 52ish degree water I wear a 7mm full suit and a 5mm hooded vest. Keeps me warm, then again have a decent amount of insulation on my body as well. :P

Get yourself an old used farmer john top. cut off the sleeves and use it as a over-vest over a 7mm full suit. you can even glue and sew a hood into it. I did this and it worked for 36 F water in our RI dives.

The thing that chills me the most is cold water flowing through my suit while swimming.

To stop this I use neoprene socks and fin keepers to keep water from moving in or out of the legs.

I also use dive computers to snug down the wrists. Gauntlet gloves also help.

It has worked well so far.

My suit also has a seal that keeps water from moving through the zipper. That might be something to add to your suit if it does not have one.

Consider a quality semi-dry suit if you like the wetsuit "feel" or don't have the bucks for a dry suit. They add seals at the wrists, neck, and ankles to keep water from circulating as much as conventional wetsuits.

I switched to a Pinnacle Polar this season and have added about 5-10 degrees of range on the colder end. There's a lot of discussion on the board about the Mares and Pinnacle suits if you do a search.

The hot water and neoprene socks also help, but I've been looking unsuccessfully for a quality 7mm sock to replace the 3mm "skin" type ones I've been using.

To All,

I was freezing my butt off last weekend when I dove at Halibut Point. Water temp. was 38-39F according to my low-tech analog gauge. I am already wearing 7mm wet suit. What else can I wear under this wet suit that can keep me warmer underwater? I don't want to end the SCUBA season any time soon, my dive buddy dives with dry suit, lucky *******...

Thanks in advance.

My 2-piece 7mm is good down to a water temp of about 43F. Below that, at about 40, my hands and feet start going numb after only 35-40 minutes.

I think you're past the wet suit temps . . ., much as I hate to admit it. (I dive wet on New Years in Northern OH, so, I'm no WWW (warm water weenie). But, there is a limit to wet suit diving.

Thank you all for your suggestions. So far, the most practical & enticing advice is the "keep a hot babe inside my suit to keep me warm" one. :gr1:
