A lot of what we like to do is kayak dive, and using a drysuit for kayak diving (or even kayaking) is a holy nightmare. Wetsuits on the other hand are great, if you get hot and it's a nice day you can pull off the top which gives you freedom to paddle better. We also have a large community of freedivers here.
Yup.....in the day we had sit-on "dive boards" [12ft 'Scouts'] with hatches fore and aft for dive gear.....really just a thick surf board...I also did a lot of long distance solo sea kayaking in Alaska and Inside Passage and carried a wet suit and fins on back deck for survival if needed and to procure dinners [17 ft Mariner sit in/no rudder and competent in rolling up back upright]....Tracy Arm below Juneau was a huge adventure with many misadventures thrown in....used fanny pack with sand for weight belt....best of both worlds solo sea kayaking and solo freediving!

Goes back to being really comfortable in and under the water....that is foundation for diver safety....cuz in the end we all dive solo.
