Uncle Pug:
sacrifice
Or in more words:
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
John, 15:13 Sure there are other Scriptures as well as similar phrases from the other religious books throughout the world.

I would imagine that you could put your spouse in there instead of friend, although most happy couples i know are great friends as well as partners. Of course this is the extreme, but at the same time would folks who are in true love lay down their lives for their spouse - this is one criteria by which i guage if i could love someone.

True love is when you can look at the same person everyday and say to yourself, "I would die for this person". When you see other people and only want that one person in your life. When you wake up every morning with a smile on your face because you know you are lying next to the most beautiful person in the world. When no other person comes to mind when you need a shoulder to cry one. You can't wait to get home to see that person again. Love is when you give up so that person may have. When you are so mad at that person you can't stand it, but you still could imagine being with out that person. Love is unconditional.......

Love is over rated. Lust is all that matters. Well, lust and diving.
The girl I fell in love with made me want to hit her with a shovel. In fact, I'd still like to. Nothing like love to ruin a good relationship.

What? Me bitter? :)

been married for 30 years and still would roll under a train with the old man...now would he do that for me, thats another question :Kissy:

In English we typically use the word "love" to refer to everything from a temporary hormonal imbalance to something that tastes or looks good, or something that's fun, or something we want, all the way up to the unconditional spiritual love (Agape) talked about in Corinthians.
Throwing aside all the things we say we love, there are three Greek words that we group under "love" that define "love" between two people better than our one word, I think.
Eros - this is sexual attraction and all its emotional accoutrements; what hollywood means when it says "love." Lust.
Filios - familial, or brotherly love; the love within a family, the bond between parents and children, brothers and sisters etc. Non-sexual fondness.
Agape - "gift" love that expects nothing in return; charity is only scratching the surface of Agape. This is the word Jesus uses when he says "Greater love hath no man than he lay down his life for another." Agape is a decision and a practice in the face of things that would destroy Eros or Filios. Unconditional love.
Our grouping of all these very different bonds between people under the one word "love" causes endless strife and misunderstanding - we can only strive for Agape.

love is when someone means more to you than the combined sum of all the problems,
grief, and heartache they may cause you.

of course, love isn't always healthy.

3dent:
'Like' is an emotion, 'love' is a commitment.

It sounds like one I heard before:

Like is an involvement, Love is a commitment.

Or lets put it another way -

Bacon and eggs. The chicken was involved. The pig was committed.
