I think he means they ( the agency ) is not taking chances covering their arzes

The agency is leaving themselves wide open and not covering themselves by having such low standards. They are taking big chances.

What specifically are we considering low "agency" standards?

Well, off the top of my head ..... the ability to swim is optional, there are almost no skin diving skills required, almost no rescue skills required, absolutely no confidence building skills required. They've been taking requirements out of their standards for about 30 years now.

By stating that the ow cert is only good to 60' aren't the shifting the liability to the individuals who operate the dive boats, resorts and so on?

If there were no danger diving to 60 ft, that would be the case. OTOH, the way their classes are structured, their graduates are, IMO, unsafe at any depth unless the instructor exceeded standards.

Hello All,

I have been following this thread with interest since I only received my certification 2 weeks ago. My husband and I have planned a trip to Australia and since he is a long time diver I thought I would give it a go. Diving is great but I must say that I felt after I completed my OW that I had a long ways to go - guess like many things it comes with practice. I had real problems with buoyancy and neither instructor pointed out that I was not using my BC to my advantage when decending. I think they were just interested in getting us through the skills required. Due to my scheduling constraints I had a different instructor for the contained water part and she was excellent.

Thanks for everyones points of view - I enjoy reading the Board. Have also read some helpful buoyancy tips on other forums....
