What happened to Cozumel?

IMO you have a pretty low threshold of what you consider to be an "out of control wind driven wildfire of controversy"; this discussion has been, again IMO, pretty tame and for the most part respectful of dissenting opinions.

I do, however, take issue with the insulting characterization of posters who disagree with the claim that diving Cozumel is all "bare rock and coral ash" as "gushing... fanbois". This is a subforum dedicated to diving Cozumel; you should not be surprised that many (most?) of us who post here enjoy diving Cozumel and disagree with that gloom and doom (and empirically off base) assessment of conditions there by someone who has relatively little experience diving Cozumel. No one here has denied that conditions on the Cozumel reefs have deteriorated to some degree over the past few decades, but the warming and contamination of the seas is a global condition; no reefs are immune.

But suit yourself; if you do not think that diving Cozumel is worth the trip, then by all means don't go there.

Do you mean go to Cozumel, or go from SB? I hope it’s not the latter.

In terms of trying to get a sense of how the diving experience is in Cozumel from a thread like this, it’s pretty tough. Some of these opinions clearly say more about the person who is posting than about the island.

I’ll give you my thumbnail opinion about Coz. I’ve been there probably 20 times, and a few other Caribbean dive destinations once or twice each. Part of that reasoning is cost; Cozumel is cheap to get to and quick from TX and the east coast. But I have really enjoyed my trips there, and the reef topography is terrific. I have consistently had excellent diving there. I haven’t been in about 10 years, but that’s only because once I started getting into cave diving, I pretty much focused on that exclusively. I will go back to Coz on one of these trips to cave dive in MX, it’s just a matter of finding the time and dragging myself out of the caves for a few days.

Well, to me that seems a bit of an overreaction, but stepping back a while from SB isn't always a bad thing. Maybe just a little less "button pushing..." except for in The Pub, of course. Personally, I find the diving in your part of the world fascinating and your stories and insights interesting. It would be a loss for SB if you packed it in. All IMHO, YMMV.

At the risk of making it even worse, what happened to LI-er?

I could probably make a fairly good guess, having seen them derail an Egypt thread earlier this month by harping on about Somali pirates, but it would be nice to know what the tipping point actually was.

There is almost always differing PoVs to any situation, dive-op, and destination. Stick around a while and you'll develop responses which you KNOW is going to ruffle feathers, but you just can't help yourself, since you actually believe it.
