This goes back to the DOS days of PC computing. "DIR" lists the contents of the current directory.
This is in contrast to the Linux/Unix/Mac users who use "LS" to list the contents of the current directory.
I would consider myself to be both a DIR and an LS practitioner, although to confuse things more, I'm also a DIR/W Practitionator.
