I just came across this dilemma yesterday...

I used to be a hockey player, so when the winter rolled around you waited in anticiapation of the ponds and lakes to freeze so you could play some shinny. Now that I dive I find myself thinking "when are the lakes going to thaw out so I can go diving again."

Looks like diving can really weed out the unimportant things in life (which is everything else)!!

Snowboard. I love it as much as I do diving!!!!
So as living in a Northern country I end the diving season during Christmas and start the snowboard season for the next three month. Then diving season opens again....
Mania

Paragliding... and you thought scuba gear was expensive... really pissed of my SO when I got into that!!

Saltwater flyfishing, kicking the dog, watching cricket and rugby, and hating it when England win!!!

I look at it this way, most of my friends who knock it, can't do it.
When they can do it, they're welcome to come back and give their opinion.

Pros who spend 4 days a week, walking green fairways chasing a white ball and make over $1,000,000 dollars for doing so, can't be too stupid.
By the way, this weeks Pro tournament was in Hawaii and the winner's check was over $1,000,000. Not bad for a weeks work. I wonder if he dove during his time off?

As far as I know Ernie Els does have a diving ticket...

I'm probably a few years older than many of you, but here's how I fit diving into my grand scheme. In my opinion, most of us just let our lives evolve and adopt our pastimes to suit that ebb and flow. It's just nature's way of letting us adjust to our aging carcasses. For sure that's been the case with me.

When I was in my 20's and 30's I drank beer, played some hockey and basketball, and fiddled with English sports cars, motorcycles and snowmobiles. Built 'em, fixed 'em and raced 'em, but mostly I was just playing with them.

Then the kids arrived and I gave up my motorized toys replacing them with a variety of interests like yardwork and all the other necessities of home ownership. To fill the pastime void I began coaching kids' hockey and baseball, naturally ending up on the various boards of the minor sports organizations.

But finally the boys grew up and left us with free time again. We took up golf. It was a natural with a son becoming a golf professional at age 18. Then about 10 years ago I returned to an old interest, curling. With all the free time we suddenly had we started travelling more. That's how I discovered diving.

We were on a holiday in Cancun in 1996 when I became interested in the scuba lessons going on in our resort's pool. I introduced myself to the instructor and took him up on his offer to try the gear. A couple of days later I was doing my first of a annual series of resort courses. After the third of these we decided to just get certified and save time and money.

Scuba diving hasn't replaced anything, just filled a recreational pastime void for me. I still play golf and curl regularly, and the yardwork still has to be done and the pool cleaned, etcetera. I only get to do about 30 or 40 dives per year but I try to make them as varied as possible with the help of newfound internet friends.

In a typical year I'll get away to the Boynton Beach area for some reef diving, Kingston/Brockville for some freshwater wreck diving, Akumal for the cenotes, and Gilboa to goof around with my quarry commando friends from the mid-west. Without going into the details, these locations work tremendously well for me financially, not in small part due to the generosity of diving friends resident in those various areas.

It continues to surprise me that folks would rather bicker on the internet than make friends. I was already bored with diving back in 2000 and losing interest when I first discovered cyber-diving on rec.scuba and in some chatrooms. I've met some great folks via the internet and for the past three years am never without invitations to dive in some very nice places with some very competent divers.

That's my story. Sorry if it's too boring. 8)

I play a bit of golf, love to flyfish, and also train and fight at karate. Also have to make time to walk my hyperactive springer spaniel.

Hi MosheDyan how's the weather. Went on holiday to Lanzarote a few years back just before Christmas with the family and we all loved it. Saw my first shark there on a try dive. Wasn't a diver then, am only recently qualified. Instructor found an Angel shark for us to have a look at, was a great dive. Was a great holiday.
