I may be the only idiot on this board who doesn't know, but I've heard about them and was wondering what they were and what they did? Are they an advanced tank system?

Glad you asked! They are life-support systems, which do not necessarily have to be SCUBA systems (space-suit back-packs, for instance). They recirculate a limited volume of gas in a circular loop, part of which is the human lungs. At one point, the gas passes through a chemical (usually soda lime) which removes the CO2 in the gas. At another point oxygen is injected to make up for the amount metabolized by the wearer. There are three major types: (1) Oxygen Rebreather---shallow water only (2) Semi-closed---either Active feed or Passive (3) Fully-closed---computer controlled
