Wow, I must be doing something wrong or right. 4 dives, 72 on the bottom here in Tampa Bay last week and I was in a full 3 mil and felt great. 80 degrees and I'd be in a long sleeve moisture wicking shirt and fishing pants.

Are you guys staying in your suit during your surface interval? IME, That'll suck the heat right out of you.

I agree that the ability to warm up during the surface interval can make all the difference in the answer to "what suit do I need?" In winter in Coz, a 3 mm has been sufficient for me when it was sunny and not too windy. But when the wind picks up and the clouds roll in and drop some drizzle, putting on a cold wetsuit before the second dive can chill me before I ever get in the water.

I've never used a wet suit since I did my open water cert in a quarry in the summer years ago and I hated it and thought I was glowing to cook in it and ran to the water to cool off. Since then we've done all our diving in July/august in coz and the keys.
This time will be there on New Year's Eve for 11 days so not sure what to do . Just doing daily two tank dives.
I'm fairly insulated but I'm thinking a shorty maybe 2 or 3 mm. Do y'all think that's sufficient and how much more weight do you need generally?
Thanks much and happy thanksgiving. I sure am thankful we can go to coz for New Years!

What in addition to all the replies to the original post would help you decide?

3 mil shorties are quite common for rental suits and from what you've written would probably be fine. Something for your head is a good idea and easy to pack. Many like 3mil beanies. That or a hood would be good just in case a shortie isn't enough.

The responses are all over the place but if I decide to invest in a shorty I didn't read anything about how much more weight I'd need

Long sleeved shorty or short sleeved? How many mil? What size shorty? Beanie or hood? How many mil is the hood? Etc.

The best way to handle this is to tell the DM "With no wetsuit or hood, I use X lbs. This is a brand new/used X mil wetsuit and my headgear is X mil. How much extra weight should I use?" The DM will see if it's long or short sleeved and see how big you are and will be able to ballpark it.

I need a NON neoprene beanie and all I come up with is this one...
XS Scuba Flex Beanie

And i can only find Small and regulars on-line? I need a Large.
