:ar15:Do we not all die anyway?

I would not make such ignorant statements. It can be dangerous for kids as well as for adults that are occupied with other activities. Personally I have more things to do other than keeping track of all active moving parts of different automatic stuff in the house. People might not hear the doors for different reasons

While I do see your point Elan, I have worked in the are of robotic installations where we had to engineer in quadruple safety redundancy JUST IN CASE someone was stupic enough to get pass the first three (which was impossible). How far do we have to take it? Children do things because they do not know better. As adults, we SHOULD know better or perhaps it is time to add chlorine to the gene pool.

I think we should all live in floating chairs like the did in WALL-E . . .

so they have to create safety devices because you want to, as an example, trim your fingernails while standing under your garage door opening?

Safety devices has to be implemented when possible on all power moving parts that can potentially cause harm. No matter what you are planning to do under them.

Say a kid is standing under the door with his mouth wide open looking at the neighbour's cat. Or you could not simply hear the door because of the diesel dump truck collecting trash near your house. There can be a bunch of other reasons someone can end up under the door.

I would say the parent should be paying closer attention to their child.

note: I am not saying safety devices have no place, I am saying that there should be a little personal responsibility when it comes to some things. i.e. if I am using a table saw, and cut a finger tip off, like a friend of mine did, I am not going to say it is the manufacturers fault for not telling me I shouldn't be using the table saw while watching the neighbors cat.

Well Steve it depends upon what they were protecting it from. Finally it's all a balance between what potential harm can be done and the cost of development/maintenance/implementation. I believe thing such as door sensors as well as other safety domestic stuff like microwave power shut door sensor are out of question. For me it just sounds out of common sense to save even a hundred of bucks on that.

Well no one blames manufacture here.

The point is to eliminate if possible all the dangers to free up the mind for other activities. Psychologists have proved that mind can track about 5+-2 activities simultaneously. I do not want to make my house the way that due to any mistake I make due to being tired, drunk or add anything of your choice I end up in the hospital.

The side of the medal is of cause is that not having to think people degrade overtime but that's another story.

We need to get the government involved immediately and have this industry regulated. 84 deaths per year out of 1 to 2 million active divers is totally unacceptable. With government regulation and oversight, I bet we could get that number up to 1000 or more within the first year... Then, the insurance companies can get together and decide how a credit score is correlated with risk of a diving accident and increase our rates accordingly. And then we can top it all off with a tax increase so that the government can bail out those same insurance companies that just jacked our rates sky high. Within just a few short years, between the government making diving 100 times more expensive than it currently is, and them taxing us so much we don't have any money left, the number of dive fatalities should drop back down to 84 per year it's currently at-because the number of people that can afford to dive has been reduced by 80%...

ok, maybe saying blame the manufacturer was not the correct way to say it, but say they should have put a blade guard on or something? whatever, I agree to disagree in this thread right this moment, if thats ok :D

anyway we are way off topic here. . .

back to the gent that passed, are there threads going about the cause of this incident?
