Thanks Doug, I was wondering the same thing. I used to only see them way out past 80-100 fsw and now they are everywhere in the shallows

I paid a little more attention today when diving Red Hill and must have seen at least 12 Purple stars. What I noticed is that they were ALL out in the sand, not on coral or the rocks at all. Don't know of that means anything, but wanted to share my observation.
 
I spotted one star like that 2 days ago at Mahukona, at about 50 ft depth on a sandy patch. This was the 1st time ever I saw one of these near the Big Island. But Mahukona is at the northern tip of Kohala, looking at Maui, so this explains where it came from.
