New Policies for Lighters and Breast Milk http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/sop/index.shtm

TSA confiscated over $12 million in lighters from passengers in 2006 alone. Always was a worthless effort, no other country did it, now they admit it.

In an effort to concentrate resources on detecting explosive threats, TSA will no longer ban common lighters in carry-on luggage starting August 4, 2007. Torch lighters remain banned in carry-ons.

Lifting the lighter ban is consistent with TSA's risk-based approach to aviation security. First and foremost, lighters no longer pose a significant threat. Freeing security officers up from fishing for 22,000 lighters every day (the current number surrendered daily across the country) enables them to focus more on finding explosives, using behavior recognition, conducting random screening procedures and other measures that increase complexity in the system, deterring terrorists. The U.S. is the only country in the world to ban lighters – all other nations, including Israel and the U.K., do not.

Pic of the torch lighter still not allowed attached....

Yeah yeah - here come the non-smokers on a thread that has nothing to do with them....

More importantly, it was a waste of TSA efforts and an abuse of passengers.

Ooooof, finally, That is a huge waste of their time that would be much better spent on some things you listed above. Has catherine seen this thread?

Why do they confiscate breastmilk??

What is the terrorist threat in that?

It was a combination of cheap politics and a shortcoming in training. "No liquids!"

When liquids were first allowed in 3.4 ounce containers (some sources say 3 ounces, even tho it's 3.4 - and some things are not available in 3 ounces here), one agent would insist that the clear bag had to be Zip-Lock-Brand, or else throw away the medicine, etc. Stupid actions happen, more so in the larger airports, it seems.

Breast milk can be in larger than 3.4 ounce containers, but there are rules about that, too.

Make Your Trip Better Using 3-1-1

3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3 ounce bottle or less (Here it says 3 ounces or less, and says bottle?); 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag (not Zip-lock-brand); 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3 oz. container size is a security measure.

Consolidate bottles into one bag and X-ray separately to speed screening.

Be prepared. Each time TSA searches a carry-on it slows down the line. Practicing 3-1-1 will ensure a faster and easier checkpoint experience.

3-1-1 is for short trips. If in doubt, put your liquids in checked luggage.

Declare larger liquids. Prescription medications, baby formula, juice and milk (when traveling with an infant or toddler) are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint. (Here is the rule for breast milk etc)

Come early and be patient. Heavy travel volumes and the enhanced security process may mean longer lines at security checkpoints.

TSA working with our partners. TSA works with airlines and airports to anticipate peak traffic and be ready for the traveling public.

But then, go to Continental.com: http://www.continental.com/web/en-U...-on.aspx?SID=6839A96B36784FD1B1B44C96FEAEBB14
If you are traveling with any liquid, gel or aerosol items, here's a few things you should remember:

* Travelers departing the U.S. may bring carry-on bags through security and aboard the aircraft with trial-size toiletries (3.4 ounces or less) (see - 3.4 ounce) which can be purchased at any drug store.

I called Continental about the difference between their site and TSA site, plus their site only addresses International. She really didn't know what to say? I may remember to call them Monday.

This site http://www.minimus.biz/TSARules.aspx will throw in a free ziplock-brand bag...
If you type the word "ZIPLOC" in the "special instructions" section during checkout, we will include a free quart size Ziploc® bag, and pack your travel size items into the bag for you!
I always keep a few, extra, empty, quart-size ziptop bags to share with distressed passengers I meet in lines.

Seriously, many travel-size items were standardized in 3.4 ounce containers, but the whole industry seems to be retooling its packaging to cooperate with what is probly a TSA typo....

In the last week or so I read an article about a study done that says an estimated one billlon, yes, with a "b", people will die this century from smoking related medical problems...I say let 'em bring the lighters on board and let 'em start smoking on the planes again.

I say one billion smokers dying prematurely this century is a good number. :D

Again....

Watch out! That guy is hiding a sunscreen bomb in his shoe. Better take away his toothpaste.
I feel safer. After all we are on a lavender terror level. Can't be too careful. If we're not vigilant the terrorists will have us up to turquoise level in no time.
